General Summary of Position
Serves as a clinical consultant and resource person to Nursing Managers, other clinical specialists, physicians, preceptors, nursing staff from other departments, students, outside agencies and affiliated institutions to positively impact standards of care, nursing care delivery and patient outcomes; serves as a consultant in the areas of clinical specialty, orientation of new staff and career advancement development; acts as liaison by establishing effective collegial relationships; initiates, facilitates and participates in research activities having implications for the understanding/improvement of clinical activities and nursing practice; demonstrates an understanding of the group process; uses learning methods in working with individuals and groups to impact standards of care and nursing delivery; assists in coordinating and implementing educational/orientation/quality improvement programs; facilitates the education process of staff and students.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.Provides coverage for identified specialist (e.g., wound care; infection prevention) in his/her absence. Assists in providing clinical care as needed.Provides consultation as an expert nurse for specific patient populations to physicians and other members of the clinical team.Actively mentors and supports colleagues and staff. Supports and encourages the professional development of the nursing staff and collaborates within and across the organization to identify internal and external resources available for staff.Provides expertise for competency development and competence assessment across the Division and coaches and provides feedback to improve professional practice within MedStar NRH.Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field of nursing practice, clinical instruction, and nursing education through a variety of professional activities including, but not limited to, reading the appropriate literature and attending related seminars and conferences.Participates as staff development/education expert on committees, task forces, focus groups and projects to support Department of Nursing and MedStar Nursing Council initiatives.Demonstrates the clinical expertise, leadership, management, communication skills and knowledge of adult learning theory and principles necessary to develop education programs and achieve optimal educational outcomes.Plans and conducts orientation of new nursing personnel that facilitates a new team member's transition to the work environment and meets competency assessment requirements in conformance with departmental objectives and accreditation standards.Designs, implements, and evaluates designated hospital based education programs and consultative services.Assesses learning needs through formal and informal approaches to data collection to determine specific education needs and utilizes teaching techniques that promote critical thinking and evidence based practice incorporating principles of adult learning theory.Identifies, coordinates, and plans educational offerings for Nursing Division staff, with consideration of but not limited to mandatory regulations, safety, performance improvement, new equipment, technologies, and clinical advancements and evaluates the effectiveness and learning outcomes of educational activities.Facilitates team building within nursing division and organization and assists nurse management staff in initiating and adapting to change.Consistent with MedStar NRH and the Division's mission, vision, goals and values, promotes an environment that embraces continuous learning and supports a framework of shared decision making.Incorporates evidence into all staff development and clinical education activities. May assist with unit-based clinical protocols, as necessary.Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate. Participates in meetings, serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
Education- Bachelor's degree in Nursing required
- Master's degree in Nursing, Health Care or related field required
Experience- 3-4 years progressively more responsible job related experience in an acute care setting required
- Experience in teaching or professional development preferred
Licenses and Certifications- RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure in the District of Columbia. required
- Specialty Certification in nursing staff professional development or in specific clinical specialty must be obtained within one year of hire. within 1 Year required
- CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
- BLS Instructor preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Considerable knowledge of current clinical literature, research in practice and therapeutic nursing interventions;
- knowledge of the principles of adult learning;
- skill in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating of educational programs to meet the needs of the nursing department;
- considerable interpersonal skills;
- considerable oral and written communication skills;
- ability to provide therapeutic interactions with patients/clients;
- ability to evaluate patient care plans;
- ability to incorporate research findings into standards of care.
This position has a hiring range of $87,318.40 -
$149,094.40
