We rely on ourDirector of Nursingto plan, coordinate, and manage the nursing department.The Director of Nursing Services (DNS) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a dual-role position responsible for overseeing the clinical care and nursing services in the skilled nursing facility, while also providing direct patient care as a licensed NP. This role requires a dynamic leader who can ensure high-quality nursing care and regulatory compliance while acting as a primary care provider for residents. The DNS/NP works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans, maintain clinical quality standards, and promote a compassionate, patient-centered care environment.

Responsibilities:

Director of Nursing (DON) Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Management:
    • Oversee daily nursing operations, ensuring that all nursing staff adhere to policies, procedures, and regulatory standards (federal, state, and local).
    • Hire, train, and evaluate nursing staff, ensuring optimal staffing levels and clinical competence.
    • Develop and implement quality improvement initiatives, ensuring a high standard of resident care.
    • Manage and monitor the facility’s nursing budget and resources, including medications, supplies, and equipment.
    • Coordinate and lead staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Clinical & Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure the facility meets all state and federal regulations, including infection control, patient safety, and documentation.
    • Perform regular audits of patient care records and nursing practices to ensure compliance with best practices and regulations.
    • Oversee and support the development and implementation of individualized care plans in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Act as a liaison between the nursing department, residents, families, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
    • Foster a culture of teamwork, professional development, and accountability among nursing staff.

Nurse Practitioner (NP) Responsibilities:

  • Direct Patient Care:
    • Provide primary care services to residents, including physical exams, diagnosing, and treating acute and chronic conditions.
    • Prescribe medications, treatments, and therapies in accordance with state regulations and facility protocols.
    • Develop and update individualized care plans for residents in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
    • in quality improvement activities, including reviewing clinical outcomes and identifying areas for clinical growth.
  • Patient Management:
    • Perform rounds and follow up on resident care and treatment progress.
    • Collaborate with physicians and specialists for consultations, referrals, and coordination of care.
    • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff, providing guidance and support in complex patient care cases.
  • Documentation & Compliance:
    • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and care plans in compliance with regulatory and facility standards.
    • Participate in quality improvement activities, including reviewing clinical outcomes and identifying areas for clinical growth.
  • Other Duties:
    • Actively participate in internal and external committees related to quality improvement, safety, and patient care.
    • Respond to emergency situations and provide necessary care and oversight in crisis scenarios.
    • Remain current with nursing and healthcare industry trends, regulations, and best practices.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master's degree in nursing required.
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred.
  • Active Nurse Practitioner certification (ANCC or AANP) required.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner in the state of Indiana.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role, preferably in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting.
  • Experience as a Nurse Practitioner, preferably in geriatric or long-term care.
