BEPC is seeking an experienced Controls Automation Engineer to support our client's manufacturing operations in Lenexa, Kansas. This is a hands-on engineering opportunity for an automation professional who enjoys PLC programming, controls troubleshooting, equipment optimization, and taking automation projects from concept through startup.

The ideal candidate will bring 3–5 years of industrial automation engineering experience, a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, and strong hands-on expertise with Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLC platforms.

You'll work directly with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, Studio 5000, HMI/SCADA systems, industrial networks, instrumentation, VFDs, and electrical controls to improve equipment reliability, production efficiency, quality, and safety.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain, modify, and troubleshoot Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley PLC programs.
• Work extensively with ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix, Studio 5000, and RSLogix 5000.
• Troubleshoot HMI/SCADA systems, including FactoryTalk View SE/ME, Ignition, or similar platforms.
• Support automation projects throughout the full lifecycle, including concept development, requirements definition, programming, installation, startup, commissioning, and operational handoff.
• Diagnose and resolve PLC, instrumentation, electrical, and control-system faults to minimize production downtime.
• Troubleshoot industrial networks and communication issues.
• Support instrumentation, sensors, VFDs, servo systems, and motor control centers (MCCs).
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including P&IDs, electrical schematics, control narratives, and programming standards.
• Partner with process engineers to develop control strategies that improve throughput, product quality, reliability, and safety.
• Perform routine control-system audits to identify risks and recommend preventive maintenance or improvement actions.
• Provide onsite and on-call technical support for critical production systems as required.
• Train and mentor maintenance technicians and operators on controls operation and basic troubleshooting.
• Ensure systems comply with applicable NFPA, OSHA, ISA/IEC, NEC, and internal engineering standards.
• Participate in continuous improvement activities to increase equipment and manufacturing performance.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 3–5 years of hands-on industrial controls and automation engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Strong Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley experience is required.
• Demonstrated proficiency with:

  • Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000
• Experience configuring and troubleshooting HMI/SCADA systems, such as FactoryTalk View, Wonderware, Ignition, or similar.
• Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols, including EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, and Modbus.
• Working knowledge of instrumentation, sensors, VFDs, servo systems, and MCCs.
• Familiarity with applicable electrical and industrial safety standards, including NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 79, and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and mechanical drawings.
• Strong analytical and systematic troubleshooting skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to provide occasional on-call, off-shift, or weekend support for critical projects and unplanned downtime.

Preferred Qualifications

• Rockwell Automation Certified Logix Designer (CLD) certification.
• Experience with batch control systems and ISA-88 standards.
• Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and ERP integrations.
• SAP integration experience.
• Robot programming or integration experience with FANUC, ABB, KUKA, or similar platforms.
• Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience.
• Experience within food & beverage, chemical, packaging, life sciences, or other process manufacturing industries.
• Familiarity with industrial control system (ICS) cybersecurity best practices.

Work Environment

This is a fully onsite position within an active manufacturing facility in Lenexa, Kansas. Remote work is not available.

The position involves regular exposure to a manufacturing plant environment, including industrial machinery, equipment, noise, and chemicals. Candidates must be comfortable standing and walking throughout the facility and occasionally working at elevated heights.

Availability for on-call support and occasional off-shift or weekend work may be required during critical projects or unexpected equipment downtime.

Some travel may also be required for vendor visits, training, or project support at other facilities, generally up to approximately 10%.
