Position Summary

TheRespiratory Therapist (RT)provides care, supervision, and clinical support to individuals with developmental disabilities in accordance with established procedures and standards.

This position combines clinical respiratory care with direct assistance inActivities of Daily Living (ADLs), ensuring a supportive and therapeutic environment.

Supervision and Work Expectations

Supervision:

  • Reports to theRT Supervisorfor performance, scheduling, and guidance
  • Receives day-to-day direction from theHome Administratorand/orLead RN

Schedule:

  • Standard shifts are12 hours; flexibility is required for overnight, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
  • Primary work location is aresidential care facility(assignments may vary)
  • Compliance withstate regulations, vaccination requirements, and safety protocolsis mandatory

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. General Responsibilities

  • Maintain asafe, clean, and therapeutic environmentthat respects residents’ dignity and rights
  • DeliverActive Treatmentand positive interventions in accordance with ICS standards
  • Use effective communication, documentation, and time management skills
  • Report incidents, suspected abuse, or violations of rights immediately to the Administrator
  • Uphold ICS’s mission of holistic, person-centered, and integrated care

2. Core Resident Care Duties

A. Daily Living Support

  • Assist residents withADLsincluding lifting, transferring, and mobility support
  • Implement and monitorIndividual Program Plans (IPPs)
  • Apply behavior support and positive intervention strategies
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure cohesive care
  • Act as aresident advocate, safeguarding individual rights and well-being
  • Facilitateskill-building and independencein daily routines
  • Promotesocial, emotional, cognitive, and developmental growththrough structured activities
  • Support a hygienic environment through light housekeeping and sanitation duties

B. Resident Engagement

  • Supportoccupational, recreational, vocational, and educational programs
  • Encourage resident participation in community and therapeutic activities
  • Display empathy and professionalism with residents and families
  • Document progress, participation, and behavior in resident records
  • Provide mentorship and onboarding support to new staff members

C. Observation, Documentation & Emergency Response

  • Observe, document, and report physical and behavioral changes promptly
  • Respond effectively to medical or behavioral emergencies
  • Conduct assessments at admission, daily, and as needed
  • Supervise residents underspecial precautions(elopement, suicide risk, self-injury, etc.)
  • Maintain and monitoremergency medical equipment and supplies
  • Complete all incident and progress reports accurately and in a timely manner

3. Respiratory Care Responsibilities

  • Deliver all respiratory care in compliance withRespiratory Care Boardregulations
  • Administer respiratory treatments and therapies safely and effectively
  • Manageoxygen delivery systemsand ventilator care
  • Performairway management and tracheal suctioning
  • Interpretarterial blood gas (ABG)results and initiate interventions
  • Administer prescribed medications accurately per protocol
  • Communicate changes in resident condition to physicians and staff promptly
  • Participate in shift handoffs, walking rounds, and interdisciplinary meetings
  • Document all treatments, outcomes, and resident responses in records

4. Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Participate in the development and review of each resident’sIPP
  • Attend case conferences and care plan reviews
  • Contribute to goal-setting, skill development, and behavioral planning
  • Promote a culture ofsafety, quality, and complianceacross all care activities

5. Facility & Environmental Support

  • Perform light housekeeping, laundry, and personal property organization
  • Inspect fire safety and adaptive equipment routinely
  • Report and correct safety hazards or equipment malfunctions immediately
  • Support infection control and universal precaution procedures

6. Training and Professional Development

  • Attend a minimum offour (4)ICS meetings annually
  • Complete requiredcontinuing education units (CEUs)to maintain licensure
  • Participate in mandatory and ongoingtraining programsfor skill enhancement

Physical Demands

This position requires sufficientstrength, agility, and enduranceto perform essential care functions. Duties may include:

  • Standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling
  • Occasional running, kneeling, or climbing
  • Operating motor vehicles and assistive equipment safely
  • Prolonged computer use or desk-based documentation

Work is primarily performed in aresidential or assisted care setting.

Qualifications and Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Current Respiratory License/Credentialsfrom an accredited body (must be maintained)
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) –Preferred
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) –Preferred
  • California Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) License
  • Minimum1 year of experiencein a related role preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Proficiency in respiratory care methods, infection control, and regulatory compliance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer proficiency and ability to adapt to new software systems
  • Professional demeanor, empathy, confidentiality, and teamwork
