We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support accurate and timely financial reporting for operations in Madison, Wisconsin. This role works closely with the Controller and plays an important part in monthly close, account analysis, compliance reporting, and cash oversight. The ideal candidate brings strong accounting knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining a high standard of accuracy.

Responsibilities:
• Prepare recurring financial packages, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports, along with the supporting reconciliations and audit-ready documentation.
• Complete reporting submissions for outside agencies and stakeholders according to monthly, quarterly, and annual deadlines.
• Compare actual results to budget expectations, highlight meaningful variances, and share practical recommendations with management.
• Manage general ledger activity by recording journal entries, supporting period-end close, and maintaining accurate accruals, allocations, and work papers.
• Reconcile bank accounts and key balance sheet accounts to ensure records are complete, accurate, and properly supported.
• Monitor property cash positions, reserves, and escrows, and coordinate disbursements with Accounts Payable as needed.
• Maintain fixed asset schedules and help ensure accounting records align with internal policies and accepted accounting standards.
• Partner with external accountants during year-end activities by preparing schedules and documentation for audits and tax filings.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen controls, improve accounting workflows, and document procedures to support consistency and efficiency.
• Contribute to ad hoc reporting, spreadsheet analysis, and special projects assigned by leadership.• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related discipline.
• At least three years of experience preparing monthly financial statements through the full month-end close cycle.
• Strong working knowledge of general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
• Advanced proficiency with spreadsheet applications and accounting software.
• Experience with corporate tax, sales tax, or corporate tax return support is valued.
• Background in real estate or property accounting is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information clearly.
• Proven ability to stay organized, protect confidential information, and manage competing deadlines with careful attention to detail.
