Refinish Technician
A collision center refinish technician prepares a vehicle’s surface and applies paint to restore its appearance after damage from an accident. Key duties include sanding, priming, masking, mixing and matching paints, and using spray guns to apply primers, base coats, and clear coats. This role requires strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and knowledge of various paint and surface preparation materials, with potential training through vocational programs or apprenticeships.
Key Responsibilities
Sizing, sanding, masking, and priming vehicle surfaces to ensure proper paint adhesion and a smooth finish.
Using spray guns and other equipment to apply primers, base coats, and clear coats evenly and without defects.
Accurately mixing and blending paints to match the vehicle’s original color or a custom request.
Inspecting the painted surface for imperfections and buffing or polishing as needed for a flawless result.
Keeping painting equipment, tools, and the workspace clean and in good working order.
Working with other collision repair technicians to ensure timely and high-quality vehicle repairs.
Skills and Qualifications
Proficiency in various painting techniques, materials, and the use of spray guns and other related equipment.
A keen eye for detail is essential for achieving high-quality results and accurate color matching.
A strong understanding of safety protocols, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and handling of hazardous materials.
Resourcefulness to overcome challenges, such as paint imperfections or difficult-to-reach areas.
