Work Environment
Custodians work across multiple zones on a campus, including administrative buildings, dorms, halls, and athletic facilities. Assignments may change based on operational needs, so flexibility in moving between zones is important. The role is physically demanding and fast paced, requiring standing and walking for the entire shift while covering large areas. Typical schedules include 2nd shift (Monday to Friday, 5:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.) and 3rd shift (Sunday night to Friday morning, 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.). Overtime is offered on a voluntary sign-up basis and is typically assigned by seniority, with mandatory overtime being rare. Work involves regular exposure to cleaning chemicals, use of standard cleaning tools and equipment, and occasional operation of floor care machines. Custodians must be willing to handle messy situations and clean a wide variety of spills and debris; however, they are not expected to handle anything dangerous or harmful. Orientation and training may occur in groups, with up to 10–15 employees starting together. The dress code focuses on safety and practicality, requiring attire suitable for physical work, exposure to cleaning solutions, and varying building conditions
