Job Description

Job Description

Job Title: Process Engineer – R&D (Data Analysis & Documentation)

Job Description

This Process Engineer role sits within a research and development team for a large technology organization serving automotive, aerospace, and other advanced applications. The primary focus is on supporting equipment launches by performing detailed data analysis and creating thorough documentation rather than designing new equipment. You will work with already designed equipment being introduced into manufacturing, using statistical tools to evaluate process capability and measurement systems, and partnering closely with production teams to ensure processes meet customer requirements and specification limits.

Responsibilities

  • Support equipment launches by focusing on data-driven process engineering activities rather than hands-on equipment design.
  • Conduct capability studies using Minitab or similar statistical analysis software to evaluate whether processes can consistently meet customer specifications.
  • Perform measurement systems analysis (MSA) to assess the accuracy, precision, and overall validity of data used for quality improvement and process control.
  • Analyze process data to identify trends, variations, and potential issues, and translate findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Develop, maintain, and organize documentation related to process performance, equipment launches, and validation activities.
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing teams to understand how real-world production conditions influence data and process outcomes.
  • Split time between office-based data analysis and on-site production observation to gain a complete understanding of process behavior.
  • Participate in process development projects as needed, contributing statistical insight and validation support, even though this is not the primary focus.
  • Support validation activities by applying statistical methods to confirm process robustness and consistency.
  • Communicate technical findings clearly to cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring that data-driven decisions are understood and implemented.
  • Manage work across at least two concurrent projects, balancing priorities and maintaining high-quality analysis and documentation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by applying process engineering and statistical analysis skills to enhance product and process performance.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 2–3 years of process engineering or closely related engineering experience, with approximately 5 years of experience considered ideal.
  • Strong background in process engineering within a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis, including capability studies and measurement systems analysis (MSA).
  • Hands-on experience using Minitab or other statistical analysis software for process and quality evaluations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform validation activities using statistical tools and methods.
  • Experience working in research and development or similar environments where new or existing equipment and processes are introduced into production.
  • Ability to interpret complex data sets and translate them into clear, actionable insights and documentation.
  • Strong collaboration skills for working closely with manufacturing and cross-functional teams.
  • Veteran-level engineering mindset with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and independently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in industries such as automotive, aerospace, or other advanced technology sectors.
  • background in research and development environments supporting equipment or process launches.
  • Green Belt or Black Belt certification, or equivalent experience with structured continuous improvement and statistical methodologies.
  • Familiarity with broader quality and validation frameworks that leverage statistical tools.
  • Comfort presenting technical findings and documentation to diverse technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing setting, supporting an R&D function that works closely with production operations. You will typically be the only Process Engineer assigned to two concurrent projects, providing a high level of ownership and visibility. The position involves an approximate 50/50 split between office-based work and time spent on the production floor. In the office, you will focus on data analysis, statistical evaluations, and documentation. On the production floor, you will observe processes and collaborate with manufacturing teams to understand why data behaves as it does and how real conditions affect process performance. The role is not hands-on in terms of operating equipment; it centers on data analysis and documentation rather than direct equipment manipulation. Typical start times range between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., with an expected average of about 45 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The environment combines a professional office setting with a dynamic production area, offering exposure to advanced manufacturing technologies and cross-functional collaboration.
