Industrial Combustion Controls Engineer

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Combustion & Process Controls Engineer to support and help grow an industrial boiler, burner, combustion, process controls, instrumentation, and field service business. This position combines engineering, field service, commissioning, troubleshooting, customer support, and project execution.

The successful candidate should be equally comfortable analyzing a control system, developing a technical solution, and working directly with industrial equipment at a customer facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineer, troubleshoot, service, upgrade, and commission industrial boiler systems, burner systems, combustion controls, and process control systems.
  • Develop and review control strategies, sequences of operation, P&IDs, electrical/control drawings, loop drawings, and system documentation.
  • Support Burner Management Systems (BMS), combustion safety systems, interlocks, permissives, flame safeguard systems, and related compliance testing and documentation.
  • Specify, apply, troubleshoot, and calibrate industrial instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical devices, control valves, and related field equipment.
  • Program, modify, troubleshoot, and commission PLC/HMI control systems and support SCADA systems and industrial communications as required.
  • Perform boiler startup, burner startup, combustion tuning, efficiency testing, emissions testing, functional testing, loop checks, and system commissioning.
  • Diagnose complex electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and control-system problems and take technical responsibility for developing practical corrective actions.
  • Support control system retrofits, modernization projects, control panel projects, and new system installations from engineering through field startup.
  • Prepare technical scopes of work, equipment recommendations, service reports, test/calibration documentation, and customer-facing technical recommendations.
  • Work directly with plant engineering, maintenance, operations, contractors, and customer personnel while providing field service, technical support, and emergency support when required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Candidates without an engineering degree may also be considered when they can demonstrate substantial directly relevant experience and a strong record of technical responsibility in industrial combustion, boiler systems, process controls, instrumentation, or controls applications.
  • Relevant experience with industrial boilers, burners, combustion systems, Burner Management Systems, process controls, industrial instrumentation, or related field engineering.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, control panels, industrial networks, instrumentation, control loops, and electrical/control troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, loop drawings, control narratives, and equipment documentation.
  • Strong hands-on diagnostic and troubleshooting skills with the ability to work independently at industrial customer facilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings and recommendations to customers.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to customer sites and work safely in industrial environments.

Experience That Would Be Particularly Valuable

Experience with industrial boiler and burner systems, combustion controls, PLC/HMI platforms, Burner Management Systems, emissions testing, efficiency testing, HART-enabled instrumentation, documenting process calibrators, control valves, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and field commissioning is highly desirable.

Experience supporting equipment and controls from major boiler, burner, instrumentation, valve, and industrial automation manufacturers is also valuable.

The Type of Engineer We Are Looking For

This is a hands-on engineering position, not a desk-only design role. The successful candidate must be comfortable entering an industrial facility, understanding how the process is intended to operate, working directly with instrumentation and control equipment, diagnosing problems, implementing or recommending corrective action, verifying safe and reliable operation, and communicating results to the customer.
