SERVICE MECHANIC

Job Description:

This position is responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and routing temporary services and equipment aboard ships and within shipyard environments. Temporary Service Mechanics ensure shipboard services are properly installed and maintained while following applicable NAVSEA Standard Items, OSHA requirements, safety procedures, and shipyard specifications.

Responsibilities include:

• Install, inspect, maintain, and repair temporary shipboard services and equipment.
• Route hoses, lines, and leads safely and efficiently.
• Install rat guards on lines and hoses with diameters of 1-1/2" and larger.
• Install and maintain freeze protection and backflow preventers.
• Set up and perform hydrostatic tests on fire and potable water hoses.
• Repair and overhaul temporary fire stations.
• Place and connect temporary water coolers aboard ships for drinking purposes.
• Install and hook up air dryers.
• Inspect, repair, and test air and water manifolds for in
• stallation aboard ships.
• Install quick disconnects within 10 feet of hull penetrations to facilitate the deployment of smoke curtains.
• Perform daily walkthroughs and inspections of temporary services to ensure compliance with applicable NAVSEA Standard Items.
• Inspect hoses, vent ducting, blowers, air manifolds, electrical disconnects, spider boxes, and cables.
• Read and interpret basic ship layout drawings.
• Understand ship nomenclature, including compartment listings, locations, and vessel navigation.
• Understand and practice proper ventilation techniques.
• Determine the completeness of work performed by other trades and shops.
• Protect the ship and ship's equipment from damage during work operations.
• Properly use anti-chafing materials on lines, leads, and hoses.
• Receive and perform receipt inspections of rental equipment, including air compressors, generators, and similar equipment.
• Set up, inspect, and maintain berms for rental equipment.
• Follow proper procedures for safely starting and stopping air compressors and generators.
• Safely move fuel cells and refuel rental equipment.
• Use basic hand tools and equipment safely and appropriately.
• Ensure job sites are left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
• Follow all applicable OSHA requirements, NAVSEA Standard Items, shipyard procedures, and safety regulations.
• Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other trades.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Previous shipyard or marine industry experience preferred.
• Experience working with temporary shipboard services and equipment preferred.
• Knowledge of applicable NAVSEA Standard Items and OSHA requirements.
• Must have WAF training.
• Must have a current forklift certification and knowledge of safe forklift operation.
• Ability to read and understand basic ship layout drawings.
• Knowledge of ship nomenclature and basic ship systems layout.
• Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize assigned work.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision when required.
• Ability to identify and address problems and concerns appropriately.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to procedures.
• Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic.
• Ability to communicate clearly and listen actively.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work effectively with supervisors and other trades.
• Ability to work aboard ships and in industrial and shipyard environments.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.
• Capable of bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing, and performing repetitive motions.
• Ability to work in confined spaces and various shipboard environments as required.
• Ability to work at heights when required.
• Must be able to wear required PPE, including but not limited to safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toe boots, and other protective equipment.
• Ability to work in manufacturing, industrial, marine, and shipyard environments.

Work Schedule & Hours:

• Full-time position averaging 40–56 hours per week, including overtime and occasional weekends as needed.
• Extended hours may be required to meet production schedules and customer deadlines.
