This entry-level to early-career role involves completing engineering assignments using standard practices and methods, preparing design plans and technical documentation, and contributing to both office-based design work and field observations. The position is designed to build professional engineering skills through hands-on project work, design calculations, plan preparation, and collaboration with experienced engineers, surveyors, and CAD professionals.

  • Assist in preparing design plans, specifications, and cost estimates that align with agency standards and project requirements.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, sketches, comparisons, and technical analyses to support design decisions.
  • Review drawings provided by vendors, clients, architects, and engineers, and recommend revisions to supervisors as needed.
  • Research and review code requirements and regulations from municipal, state, county, and federal agencies to ensure compliance.
  • Document design options, findings, and technical results for supervisor review and project records.
  • Produce reports and technical documentation summarizing studies, evaluations, and project details.
  • Conduct field visits to understand site constraints, gather data, and support design development.
  • Coordinate assigned tasks with designers, technicians, and engineers within the discipline group to ensure cohesive project delivery.
  • Communicate proactively with supervisors regarding workload, schedule changes, or scope adjustments.
  • Review all work for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to standards before submission.
  • Perform occasional deliveries, pickups, or errands as needed to support project activities.
  • Support the planning, design, and technical execution of civil engineering projects, particularly in site and land development.
  • Engage in hands-on project work including design calculations, plan preparation, and field observations to build professional engineering skills.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers, surveyors, and technical staff to refine design solutions and resolve project challenges.
  • Participate in a culture centered on communication, problem-solving, and dependable client service.

Essential Skills

  • 0–4 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Engineer Intern (EI) certification or the ability to obtain it within one year.
  • Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles, practices, and mathematical applications.
  • Ability to perform engineering computations, estimates, and moderately complex design tasks.
  • Familiarity with engineering field instruments and standard office tools.
  • Basic proficiency in computer-aided design software such as Civil 3D and OpenSite.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing reports, correspondence, and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to evaluate data and develop practical design solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with colleagues, clients, and supervisors.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Exposure to civil design and grading concepts in an academic or professional setting.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and Civil 3D for civil engineering design tasks.
  • Interest in developing skills across diverse project types, including civil engineering, land surveying, and related services.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team that includes civil engineers, drafters, and surveyors.
  • Motivation to pursue professional engineering licensure, supported by training under a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Desire to grow design capabilities and progress into project management responsibilities over time.

Work Environment

The role is based in a growing office with approximately ten team members, including civil engineers, drafters, and surveyors, offering a collaborative environment with direct access to experienced professionals. The Civil Engineer will primarily work in an office setting, focusing on design, calculations, plan preparation, and technical documentation, while also conducting site visits as needed, with an approximate 75% office and 25% field split that may vary by project. The position provides hands-on exposure to a range of civil engineering projects and the opportunity to work closely with engineers, surveyors, and CAD professionals. The successful candidate will be trained under a licensed Professional Engineer and can accrue hours toward professional licensure, with a clear path to expand design responsibilities and grow into project management.
