Design Engineer

Design Engineer – Contract Opportunity | Ann Arbor, MI | $50–$55/Hour

Reliance One is seeking an experienced Design Engineer for a contract opportunity in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This role is ideal for a Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in automotive design, engine development, powertrain systems, CAD, and GD&T.

Position Details:

• Contract opportunity

• Pay Rate: $50–$55/hour

• Local travel: Approximately 10%

• Overtime: Approximately 20%

What You'll Be Doing:

• Develop 3D models, 2D drawings, technical reports, and engineering instruction sheets

• Participate in design reviews and report key design metrics

• Develop countermeasures to achieve cost, mass, performance, and fatigue-strength targets

• Collaborate with vehicle, drivetrain, engine design, purchasing, manufacturing, and other engineering teams

• Manage suppliers to ensure quality parts are delivered according to project milestones

• Support continuous improvement of engineering design processes and deliverables

• Benchmark competitive designs for cost, performance, and customer expectations

• Support automotive engine and powertrain design and development activities

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering

• 4+ years of automotive design/development experience

• Strong CAD skills

• Strong understanding of GD&T

• Knowledge of conventional, hybrid, and electrified powertrains

• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

• Proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint

• Ability to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional engineering teams

• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed

• Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record

Highly Preferred Experience:

• Extensive engine design or development experience

• Detailed design experience with ICE systems, including lubrication, belt systems, timing chain covers, fuel systems, cooling systems, intake systems, and exhaust systems

• Experience with CREO and powertrain CAE tools such as FEA, CFD, or GT-Power

• Knowledge of aluminum and iron castings, thermoplastics, stampings, and forgings

• Hands-on engine or powertrain assembly experience

• Advanced knowledge of GD&T and ICE/transmission manufacturing methods

• Experience with DRBFM

• Knowledge of Quality Management and Supply Chain Management principles

• Production engineering experience

• Master's degree in Engineering is a plus
