Your Day-to-Day Activities
  • Perform field inspections for natural gas construction, installation, testing, and related infrastructure activities.

  • Monitor contractor work for compliance with approved plans, utility specifications, construction standards, codes, and applicable regulations.

  • Inspect gas piping systems and associated construction activities for workmanship, quality, and compliance.

  • Observe trenching, excavation, shoring, backfill, and other underground construction activities associated with gas infrastructure projects.

  • Verify that construction activities are performed using approved methods, materials, and procedures.

  • Identify construction deficiencies, quality concerns, safety issues, and deviations from established requirements.

  • Communicate inspection findings with contractors, construction personnel, project leadership, and utility representatives.

  • Maintain accurate and objective inspection records and field documentation.

  • Coordinate with construction teams while maintaining independence in inspection and quality decisions.

  • Verify applicable project requirements and Operator Qualifications before and during field activities.

  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions or practices are identified.

  • Support resolution of field issues while maintaining project safety, quality, and compliance expectations.

  • Maintain required certifications and Operator Qualifications throughout the assignment.

The Job Requirements
  • Direct experience inspecting natural gas utility, gas distribution, or pipeline construction.

  • Current API 1169 Pipeline Construction Inspector certification.

  • Active NULCA Certification

  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • Ability to obtain and maintain utility-required Operator Qualifications.

  • Working knowledge of gas piping construction, installation, and testing practices.

  • Experience inspecting trenching, excavation, shoring, or similar underground utility construction activities.

  • Ability to interpret and enforce construction specifications, applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.

  • Strong understanding of construction safety practices and the ability to exercise Stop Work Authority when necessary.

  • Ability to independently evaluate contractor workmanship and construction quality.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and objectivity while working closely with contractors and construction teams.

  • Ability to work effectively in active field construction environments.

  • Must meet applicable union membership requirements for the assignment.

You'll Stand Out If You Have
  • Significant field inspection experience on California gas utility projects.

  • Extensive Operator Qualifications covering multiple gas construction activities.

  • Previous experience inspecting gas distribution or pipeline projects for a major California utility.

  • Strong knowledge of underground gas construction, trenching, shoring, testing, and restoration activities.

  • Experience documenting construction deficiencies and coordinating corrective actions with contractors.

  • Experience working within highly regulated utility construction environments.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently enforce safety, quality, and construction requirements in the field.
