Position Overview

The main function of this position is to provide direct and indirect care under supervision of the nurse to a selected group of residents. This role can be in skilled care department or assisted living department.The minimum education, experience and qualifications for this position are: current certification as a nursing assistant with the Illinois Department of Public Health; able to speak, read, write and comprehend English skills needed to use medical terminology on the job; ability to do simple arithmetic; good communication skills; interest in working with older adults; and general knowledge of the needs of geriatric residents

Key Responsibilities

  • Personal hygiene, grooming advice and assistance.
  • Dressing assistance.
  • Stand-by shower or full bathing assistance.
  • Handling and care of clothing and other personal property, including dentures, glasses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices.
  • Escorting and transporting residents, transferring as needed.
  • Provides assistance to low vision residents by reading mail, menus, schedules, etc.
  • Reminds residents of activities and special events.
  • Observes and reports perceived changes in resident's physical condition and cognitive/emotional status according to policies and procedures.
  • Monitors for and reports unusual occurrences, accidents or safety concerns and reports to Director of Assisted Living.
  • Reminds residents to take pre-dispensed, self-administered medications, observes residents and documents whether or not the resident takes the medications according to established policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Skills

  • CPR certified, Accredited by American Heart Association.
  • Reading, writing, and comprehension skilled needed to use medical terminology on the job.
  • Ability to do simple arithmetic.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Long-term care experience preferred but not required.
  • General knowledge of the needs of general patients.
