Mechanic

Position Summary

The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, repairing, inspecting, and servicing all company vehicles, including light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks, as well as small equipment and tools, under the direction of the Shop Leadership Team. This role supports daily shop operations by performing preventive maintenance, basic mechanical repairs, equipment inspections, parts management, and shop organization.

The Mechanic is expected to maintain a strong commitment to safety, demonstrate attention to detail, and contribute to the efficiency and reliability of company assets. This position also requires a proactive attitude, mechanical aptitude, and a willingness to learn, develop skills, and grow within the Equipment Department.

Essential Job Functions

• Perform maintenance and repairs on company vehicles, trailers, small tools, and construction equipment under the direction of shop leadership and senior mechanics.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance, including fluid checks, filter replacements, lubrication, tire service, battery inspections, and minor mechanical adjustments.
• Support mechanics by preparing tools and equipment, staging parts, and maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work area.
• Conduct equipment and vehicle inspections, accurately document findings on service reports and checklists, and assist with DOT inspections to develop compliance knowledge and understanding.
• Assist with equipment fueling, cleaning, pressure washing, and pre- and post-operation inspections.
• Support the loading and unloading of equipment, materials, parts, and tools as needed.
• Reportequipment deficiencies, safety concerns, damage, or unusual operating conditions to the Shop Supervisor or Service Manager in a timely manner.
• Maintain organization and accountability of shop tools, equipment, inventory, and parts storage areas.
• Assist with the pickup and delivery of parts, materials, tools, and equipment as required.
• Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements while working in the shop, yard, or field.
• Maintain accurate and complete documentation of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs performed, and parts used.
• Support special projects, equipment mobilizations, and continuous improvement initiatives within the shop and Equipment Department.
• Ensure the cleanliness, organization, and overall appearance of shop facilities, yard areas, and inventory locations.
• Represent the Equipment Department professionally when interacting with mechanics, drivers, vendors, and field personnel.

• Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
• Perform other related duties as assigned. Responsibilities may be modified, expanded, or reassigned based on operational requirements and business needs.

Qualifications

Education:

• High school diploma or GEDpreferred but not required.
• Technical school training or coursework in mechanics preferred but not required.

Experience:

• 1–3years of basic mechanical, automotive, diesel, or equipment repair experience preferred.
• Experience working in a shop, equipment yard, or construction environment preferred.

Licenses/Certifications (if applicable):

• Valid California driver’s license required.
• Class A license preferred but not required.
• Mechanical or equipment-related certifications preferred but not required.

Skills:

• Ability to perform basic mechanical tasks and use hand tools safely.

• Ability to understand and follow instructions from senior mechanics and supervisors.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn new skills.
• Ability to communicate professionally with shop staff and field employees.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of company and equipment information.
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) preferred.
• Ability to learn equipment systems, repair processes, and shop safety procedures.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Requirements:
This position is classified as light to medium work. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, crouch, reach, and use hands and fingers to operate tools, equipment, and vehicles. Duties may involve working in both shop and outdoor environments and may require frequent movement throughout the workday. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials, tools, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and up to 25 pounds frequently. The position may also require climbing in and out of vehicles and equipment, working in various weather conditions, and performing tasks in confined or awkward positions for extended periods. Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed in a maintenance shop and equipment yard environment, with occasional travel to field and construction sites as needed. The position is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, vehicle and equipment operations, noise, vibration, dust, grease, and changing weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate to high, and the employee may be required to work both indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and environmental conditions. When visiting job sites or performing field service work, exposure to construction-related hazards may occur. All work must be performed in accordance with company safety policies and applicable Cal/OSHA regulations. Employees are required to wear and properly use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow established safety procedures at all times.
