Position Overview

This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level Civil Design Engineer to launch a long-term engineering career with a stable, community-focused civil engineering and surveying firm. R.H. Batterman & Co., Inc. is growing its Civil Engineering Team and is seeking a motivated early-career engineer who wants hands-on project exposure, mentorship, and a clear path for professional growth.

As a Civil Design Engineer I, you will support transportation, land/site development, municipal, and infrastructure projects while working closely with experienced engineers, project managers, surveyors, construction management staff, and clients. This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, curious, organized, and eager to build practical civil design experience in a supportive team environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design of civil engineering projects across transportation, municipal, land/site development, and infrastructure markets
  • Prepare engineering reports, plans, details, calculations, exhibits, and project documentation
  • Use AutoCAD Civil 3D and related design software to support project development
  • Collaborate with engineering, surveying, and construction management teams
  • Support project managers and senior engineers with design tasks, research, documentation, and coordination
  • Help maintain project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client expectations
  • Assist with plan production, quantity takeoffs, specifications, and construction-related documentation
  • Support field visits, site observations, and project coordination as needed
  • Communicate clearly with internal team members and ask questions to support learning and project accuracy
  • Apply civil engineering fundamentals to practical design challenges
  • Review redlines, incorporate revisions, and continue building technical judgment
  • Learn firm standards, client expectations, design workflows, and project delivery processes
  • Contribute to local infrastructure projects that support communities throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university
  • Experience: New graduate to 0-3 years of civil engineering experience
  • Licensure Path: E.I.T. certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire
  • Software: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Technical Interest: Interest in civil design, transportation, municipal engineering, land/site development, infrastructure, or public works projects
  • Communication: Strong verbal, written, organizational, and team communication skills
  • Work Style: Positive attitude, curiosity, reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with engineers, surveyors, construction management staff, project managers, and clients
  • Location: Local candidates strongly preferred; out-of-area candidates may be considered
  • Work Setting: Ability to work fully in person during onboarding and training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship Experience: Civil engineering internship, co-op, or summer experience preferred but not required
  • Design Exposure: Exposure to AutoCAD Civil 3D, plan production, civil site design, roadway design, municipal projects, or public infrastructure work
  • Field Experience: Experience with site visits, construction observation, surveying coordination, or field data collection
  • Wisconsin Interest: Interest in supporting projects throughout Rock County, Walworth County, Wisconsin, and Northern Illinois
  • Career Growth: Desire to grow into a Civil Design Engineer II, Project Engineer, or Project Manager role over time
  • Relocation: Willingness to relocate to the Rock County or Walworth County area if not already local

Ideal Candidate Profile

This opportunity is best suited for an early-career civil engineer who wants to learn the right way, not get tossed into chaos and told to “figure it out.” The ideal candidate is motivated, detail-oriented, dependable, and comfortable asking good questions while building confidence with design tools, project documentation, field coordination, and client-focused engineering work.

The strongest fit will be someone who wants to grow with a stable local firm, contribute to meaningful community infrastructure projects, and develop under experienced professionals who value mentorship, quality, and long-term career development.
