Controls Engineer

This Controls Engineer role supports a high-volume automotive glass manufacturing facility that relies on advanced robotics, automation, and sophisticated control systems. The position focuses on designing, programming, and commissioning control systems for equipment such as furnaces, ovens, presses, cutting lines, conveyor systems, and vision systems. You will play a key role in ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient operation of production equipment, with a strong emphasis on PLC programming, motion control, and HMI development.

• Design and oversee the build of control panels required for new automation and production projects.
• Create new control systems and modify existing systems to support equipment upgrades and process improvements.
• Integrate and commission new equipment and legacy systems, ensuring reliable and stable operation within the production environment.
• Program and design automated equipment, including robotics, furnaces, ovens, presses, cutting lines, conveyor systems, and vision systems.
• Develop, review, and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics, and create accurate documentation for new and existing systems.
• Troubleshoot PLCs, HMIs, drives, and other control components to quickly identify and resolve automation issues.
• Configure and optimize motion control systems, including AC and DC drives, to achieve desired performance and reliability.
• Collaborate closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to understand operational needs and implement effective control solutions.
• Ensure all work complies with applicable safety rules, regulations, and internal standards, and promote safe work practices on the production floor.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives by enhancing control strategies, improving system reliability, and reducing downtime.
• Communicate effectively with other shifts and teams to provide updates on system changes, issues, and ongoing projects.
• Maintain and update control system software, backups, and documentation to support long-term system maintainability.

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
• At least 3 years of experience programming and troubleshooting Rockwell / Allen-Bradley PLCs, including PLC-5, RSLogix 500, and Studio 5000.
• Hands-on experience with Rockwell motion control systems, including AC and DC drives.
• Experience with Rockwell HMI platforms, specifically FactoryTalk View.
• Proficiency in PLC programming and troubleshooting in an automation or manufacturing environment.
• Ability to read, interpret, and create electrical diagrams and schematics.
• Experience with electrical design for control panels and automated equipment.
• Strong understanding of industrial automation, including robotics, motion control, and HMI development.
• Ability to work in compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
• Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and different shifts.

• Experience with AutoCAD Electrical or similar tools for control panel and electrical design.
• Additional experience or advanced knowledge in engineering disciplines related to controls and automation.
• Background in working with robotics (such as ABB and Fanuc) and complex automated production lines.
• Familiarity with vision systems such as Keyence and Cognex is beneficial.
• Experience working with furnaces, ovens, presses, cutting lines, and conveyor systems in a manufacturing environment.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.

This role is based in a factory environment dedicated to manufacturing toughened glass for automotive applications. The facility uses a wide range of advanced equipment, including ABB and Fanuc robotics, Glasstech furnaces, Casso Solar ovens, presses, Bando cutting lines, multiple conveyor systems, and Keyence/Cognex vision systems. The control systems are primarily based on Texas Instruments PLCs, with a smaller portion utilizing Rockwell / Allen-Bradley platforms. The Controls Engineer works on a first-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, with negotiable but consistent hours. Occasional weekend work may be required to support production or project needs. The position offers a stable, largely weekday schedule with minimal overtime and no travel, and the consultant receives paid time off and holidays during the contract. You will work closely with other shifts and teams, including second shift, in a collaborative production and maintenance environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Shelbyville, IN.

The pay range for this position is $48.08 - $57.69/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
