Job Type: Part-Time

Reports to: Camp Miller Executive Director

Camp Summary

Serving Duluth and the surrounding communities for more than 120 years, YMCA Camp Miller provides over 750 campers each summer with a first-class camp program. Nestled on 340 acres of pristine campgrounds, Camp Miller serves as a regional residential camp and conference/retreat center. Located in Pine County, in the town of Sturgeon Lake, Camp Miller provides a picture-perfect, all-inclusive Y camp experience unlike any other in Northern Minnesota and serves as a destination camp for the surrounding communities. Its large field, abundant trail system, and art/activity structures provide an environment that builds self-confidence, strengthens independence, and forges relationships. It’s not just children who benefit from zip-lining, canoeing, fishing, archery, climbing, and wildlife/nature encounters. In addition, Camp Miller operates during the shoulder season providing programming for school groups, family camps, corporate retreats, specialized events, and weddings. The Director of Camp Miller should demonstrate a passion to work with campers, support the vision and capital campaign goals for the Y and Camp Miller, and commit to excellence in every aspect of the services we provide. YMCA Camp Miller’s mission: To provide positive, life-enhancing experiences for youth through activities that focus on teaching YMCA core values, developing life skills, and building character in a safe, fun, and supportive outdoor setting.

Summary/Objective
Provide a welcoming and safe atmosphere for camp guests through general cleaning duties, restocking supplies, assisting guests with set-up, monitoring activities for safety, and answering questions from guests.To further the mission of YMCA Camp Miller through the planning and delivery of programs and events that are safe and fun for guests. These activities would include high ropes challenge courses, team building, archery, slingshots, ax throwing, arts and crafts, biking, hiking, a variety of field games, and more. This position also provides general guidance, support, and oversight of any programs that are taking place at Camp Miller.

Essential Functions

  • Welcomes the group leader, supports at check-in time, and offers tours or other assistance as the group arrives.
  • Ensures camp is attractive and clean by completing duties listed on cabin cleaning schedules.
  • Replaces soap, paper towels, and other supplies as needed.
  • Empties of garbage and recycling throughout the event.
  • Monitors group activities to ensure compliance with camp policies and safety rules.
  • Assists the group with reasonable requests that will enhance the quality of their experience while at camp
  • Ensures firewood is stocked at all of the fire circles.
  • Responds to emergencies and perform First Aid/CPR and activate EMS for life-threatening conditions.
  • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment throughout camp including lodges, program areas, etc.
  • Supports kitchen staff before and after meals.
  • Instructs a variety of camp activities and lead activities as scheduled.
  • Supervises our climbing operations including a rock wall, low ropes course, and high ropes course.
  • Manage the physical facilities and equipment in each land program area

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have any supervisory responsibility of any other staff.

Work Environment

This position works in an outdoor, year-round camp environment in which uneven ground, obstacles, camp and outdoor equipment, and other camp items are commonly encountered each day.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The employee must be able to perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing (60 minutes or more), bending, reaching, and lifting. The employee must also frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds while unloading food, supplies, and equipment as needed.

Visual and auditory ability is required to identify and respond to environmental, food safety, and other hazards of the site and facilities and camper and staff behavior.

Required Education and Experience

  • Knowledge of current health and safety laws and practices
  • High School Diploma
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
