Job Title: Medical Scribe – Ophthalmology

Job Description

This role provides real-time documentation support to physicians in a high-volume ophthalmology and retina clinic environment. The medical scribe accurately records patient encounters in the EMR system, supports multiple physicians with varying documentation styles, and helps maintain efficient clinic flow across several locations. This position offers exposure to advanced retina care, high-level clinical research, and clear opportunities for career progression within a respected clinical research setting.

Responsibilities

  • Document physician-patient encounters in the EMR system in real time, ensuring accurate and thorough capture of all medical information during each visit.
  • Record detailed patient histories, examination findings, assessments, and treatment plans as directed by the physician.
  • Scribe for multiple physicians, adapting to individual documentation styles and preferences while maintaining consistency, accuracy, and quality.
  • Ensure completeness and precision of all medical documentation, including medical terminology, diagnoses, and procedures.
  • Perform precise data entry related to ophthalmology and retina care, following clinic protocols and EMR standards.
  • Support a high volume of patient care in a clinic environment that may see 80–100 patients per day, maintaining focus and accuracy under pressure.
  • Collaborate closely with clinic staff and a team of other scribes to support efficient clinic flow and patient throughput.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with all healthcare documentation and privacy standards.
  • Travel between assigned clinics several days per week to provide consistent documentation support across multiple locations.
  • Participate in training sessions and ongoing learning opportunities to stay aligned with clinical, documentation, and research standards.

Essential Skills

  • BS or AS degree in a life science field.
  • 1+ years of on-site medical scribing experience; remote scribing experience does not qualify.
  • Demonstrated experience with EMR systems and accurate medical documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, particularly related to ophthalmology and retina care.
  • Experience in patient care or medical assisting within a clinical environment.
  • High typing speed with strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in an extremely fast-paced clinic that may see 80–100 patients per day.
  • Self-motivated (“Type A” personality) with a strong sense of ownership and responsibility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a large clinical team and communicate clearly with physicians and staff.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to healthcare privacy standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ophthalmic experience is preferred and highly beneficial for success in this role.
  • Prior experience in retina or specialty care settings is an advantage.
  • Interest in clinical research and a desire to grow into a clinical research role over time.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different physicians’ documentation styles and clinic workflows.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a high-volume environment.
  • Professional demeanor and the ability to maintain composure and accuracy under time pressure.
  • Interest in ongoing professional development; annual continued education support is available.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, Monday–Friday position with schedules falling between approximately 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on clinic needs. While the schedule may span these hours, it is rare to start at the earliest time or work until the latest time unless the clinic is extremely busy. The role functions as a float position among nearby clinics, with travel expected about three days per week; transportation is provided and travel time is paid. Training takes place at an administrative building in the Galleria area for at least one day. Each physician is supported by a team of clinic staff, and scribes work within teams ranging from 8 to 24 individuals. Employees are typically assigned to three primary clinics, with a home clinic in a very high-volume location that can see 100+ patients per day, and they receive their schedules two weeks in advance. On rare occasions, such as special trainings, scribes may be asked to support a clinic outside their three primary locations, with mileage reimbursement provided in those cases. The environment is extremely fast-paced, with clinics regularly seeing 80–100 patients per day, requiring sustained focus and efficiency. The dress code consists of navy blue scrubs. Nails must be kept short and well groomed, and all hair must be neatly tied back to maintain a professional, hygienic clinical appearance.
