Multi-Axis CNC Programmer-Setter
Location: Hamilton, Ohio | Employment: Full-Time | Compensation: $28–$40/hr
Mural Group is partnering with a precision CNC machine shop in Hamilton, OH to add an experienced expert who can own the entire machining workflowfrom setup to production handoff.
A day in this role
You arrive to a stack of complex prints with tight GD&T callouts (ASME Y14.5). The first job is a titanium part destined for aerospace. You choose the right workholding, build a tooling plan, and bring a 5-axis milling center online. At the control, you refine the posted toolpathstweaking G-code and conversational steps to nail tolerances and surface finish. A first-article heads to the CMM; you verify with micrometers, bore/thread gauges, and surface measurement tools, then document results. With production underway, you monitor process capability, adjust offsets, and eliminate chatter or surface defects as they arise. Later, you stage a lights-out cell with robot assist for stainless components, mentor an operator on best practices, and update traveler records and tool inventory before closing the loop.
What you’ll own
- End-to-end setups on CNC mills, lathes, and mill-turn/multi-axis equipmentfrom print to first-part approval
- Selection and qualification of tooling, workholding, and fixturing suited to geometry and material
- On-control program edits and optimization (G-code, conversational, or CAM post) to achieve tolerance and finish
- First-article inspection using CMM and precision hand metrology; thorough documentation
- Production execution: in-process checks, offsets, and tooling adjustments to maintain capability
- Interpretation of complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and customer-specific requirements
- Support for automation and lights-out machining cells, including robot-assisted operations
- Troubleshooting chatter, tool breakage, dimensional drift, and surface finish issues
- Mentoring CNC Operators and contributing to process improvement and cycle-time reduction
- Accurate recordkeeping across travelers, production logs, and tool inventories
What you bring
- 5+ years of CNC machining with proven setup and program-editing capability
- Proficiency on multi-axis platforms: milling, turning, and/or combined mill-turn
- Fluency reading complex prints and GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Hands-on metrology: CMM, surface plates, micrometers, bore gauges, and thread gauges
- Deep understanding of cutting tools, strategies, speeds/feeds, and workholding by material
- Experience machining aluminum, steel, stainless, and at least one specialty alloy (e.g., titanium, Inconel)
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities across multiple concurrent jobs
- Uncompromising commitment to first-time quality and zero-defect production
Bonus points
- Experience on 5-axis milling centers (Mazak, DMG Mori, Haas, or similar)
- Mill-turn or Swiss-turn programming/operation
- Background in aerospace (AS9100) or defense environments
- CAM programming (Mastercam, Fusion 360, Hypermill, etc.)
- CMM programming (Calypso, PC-DMIS, or equivalent)
- Hands-on with lights-out/robotic automation cells
