Job Title: Tool Design Engineer
About the Role We are seeking a Tool Design Engineer to design and develop tools, equipment, and systems. In this role, you will conduct research applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials. A key focus will be implementing sound design for manufacturing principles to produce the simplest, most cost-effective products to meet our end market's needs.
Key Responsibilities
Create and develop tooling for pulp products, which includes developing Solidworks models and manufacturing drawings, specifying manufacturing processes, developing bills of material, and assembling, testing, and evaluating tooling.
Evaluate designs regarding cost, manufacturability, serviceability, ergonomics, safety, and compliance with specifications.
Execute design changes, cost reductions, warranty improvements, and manufacturing methods.
Perform and analyze tests to track results and make improvements.
Perform root cause analysis and work towards resolutions.
Participate in trial testing, machine installation, startup, and support of equipment at customer facilities.
Ensure the health and safety of others through sound designs applied to manufacturing, assembly, and service.
Perform other duties as required to meet customers' requirements and deadlines.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent work experience.
Experienced 3D CAD user; Solidworks preferred.
Experience with manufacturing drawings, dimensioning and tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.
Strong mechanical aptitude with a demonstrated basic knowledge of mechanical systems and manufacturing methods.
Hands-on mechanical experience, including familiarity with basic tools, assembly, and repair of mechanical apparatus.
Superior computer skills; well-versed in the Microsoft Office Suite (particularly strong with Excel).
Experience in 2-D CAD or a similar package to support machine and production plant layouts is preferred.
Ability to thrive in a team environment, providing support and encouraging collaboration.
Ability to work in a culture of continuous improvement, utilizing provided business tools to drive simplicity, cost reductions, and overall process improvements.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Collaborative environment working in conjunction with other engineering disciplines, manufacturing, assembly, supply chain, finance, sales, clients, and vendors.
General work week of 40 hours with the flexibility required to meet project deadlines.
Comfortable in customer work environments wearing proper protective equipment as required.
Willing and able to travel to customer sites when required (less than 10% of the time).
Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office equipment.
Ability to handle equipment or parts weighing up to 40 pounds to support the machine design process.
