What a Day Looks Like
You start your shift by reviewing blueprints and mechanical drawings to understand the exact specifications of each job. From there, you translate those requirements into machine-ready programs, planning efficient toolpaths and configuring CAM output. You load raw material and parts, run test pieces to confirm tolerances, and then set the CNC to run full production cycles.
While the machines work, you stay closemonitoring operations, making real-time adjustments, and ensuring strict adherence to quality and safety standards. You measure and inspect parts using precision hand metrology tools, compare results to requirements, and document any changes you make. Before you wrap up, you complete daily machine checks, update and organize reusable cut files, and make sure cutting bits are properly inventoried for the next run.
Core Responsibilities
- Program, set up, and operate CNC equipment for cutting, drilling, milling, and related machining work.
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine machining strategy and desired outcomes.
- Convert instructions into accurate computer commands, including programming and toolpathing.
- Stage, prepare, and load raw materials and parts on the machines.
- Run test pieces to validate programs and confirm outputs meet specification.
- Configure machines to execute complete cycles for part fabrication.
- Oversee production runs; fine-tune feeds, speeds, and offsets to optimize results.
- Inspect and measure completed components to verify conformance to requirements.
- Perform daily machine checks and basic preventive maintenance.
- Follow instructions precisely and comply with all safety guidelines.
- Create, organize, and maintain reusable cut files.
- Track and maintain an inventory of cutting bits and related tooling.
Qualifications
- MUST HAVE toolpathing knowledge.
- Skilled in CNC machinery operation, tooling, and precision measurement tools.
- Able to read and interpret mechanical documents and drawings.
- Computer savvy with a foundational understanding of programming and CAD/CAM.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and solid math skills.
- Experience with VCarve/AlphaCam is a plus.
