Functional Safety Engineer
Hybrid Work Schedule | Contract-to-Direct Hire | $35–$47 per hour
Reliance One is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to support the development and implementation of safety-related systems and processes for our customers. This position will apply functional safety practices to products within Electrified Mobility, Intelligent Mobilityincluding ADAS and autonomous drivingand Connected Mobility.
The Functional Safety Engineer will support multiple development programs while collaborating directly with customers and cross-functional engineering teams.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and maintain functional safety plans aligned with customer program timelines
- Create and review Item Definitions and Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments (HARA)
- Perform and review safety analyses, including FTA, FMEA, FMEDA, and DFA
- Derive safety requirements and develop functional and technical safety concepts
- Support the implementation of safety requirements at the system, hardware, and software levels
- Conduct functional safety architecture and design reviews
- Define verification and validation testing requirements
- Support safety reviews, process audits, and product functional safety assessments
- Communicate technical findings and recommendations directly to customers and project teams
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- 1–5 years of relevant experience in systems, software, hardware, controls, or automotive engineering
- At least one year of functional safety experience
- Knowledge of ISO 26262, ISO 21448, IEC 61508, or comparable industry safety standards
- Experience applying functional safety principles to complex vehicle electrical systems
- Experience with ISO 26262-based processes, including risk analysis, safety concept development, FMEA, and FTA
- Experience supporting functional safety activities throughout the product development lifecycle, including:
- Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA)
- FTA, FMEA, FMEDA, and DFA
- Safety concept development
- Requirements engineering
- Architecture reviews
- Verification and validation testing
- Ability to interpret and evaluate complex vehicle systems and architectures from a safety perspective
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience across multiple industries, such as automotive, commercial vehicles, or off-highway equipment
- Experience with FMEA and FTA tools such as Reliability Workbench, Ansys medini analyze, or similar platforms
- Ability to interpret MATLAB/Simulink models and C/C++ code
- Strong organization and project management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional presentation skills and the ability to interact directly with clients
- Self-motivated, organized, and effective in a collaborative team environment
