We are hiring Structural Steel Fitters for a manufacturing facility in La Crosse, Virginia. This position is primarily focused on fitting and preparing structural steel components for welders, with some MIG welding as needed.
Day 1 Expectations / Must Haves
Candidates must be able to:
- Pass a 3/8" Flat Weld Test
- Pass a Vertical Tack Test
- Pass a Single-Bead Vertical Test
- Read and interpret blueprints
- Accurately read a tape measure
- Understand and work with decimals
- Have previous experience fitting structural steel, including:- Beams
- Joists
- Webbing
- Connection plates
- Stiffeners
- Supporting brackets
- Other structural steel components
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints to properly fit and assemble structural steel
- Measure and lay out material according to blueprint specifications
- Fit components into position and tack weld them in place for production welders
- Use fitting clips and other tools to accurately position components
- Build up beams using webbing, connection plates, two flanges, and other structural components
- Verify measurements and decimals to ensure components are fitted correctly before welding
- Maintain a strong focus on quality and accuracy, as the fitter's work directly sets the welder up for success
- Perform primarily fitting rather than welding
- When welding is required, use .045 MIG wire at 24–30 amps and 400–500 wire speed
- Welding performed in this role will primarily be flat welding
