Job Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while managing the full workflow from patient intake through specimen processing and documentation. You support daily laboratory operations by collecting, labeling, processing, and storing specimens according to established procedures, while maintaining regulatory compliance and delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws (venipuncture) and other specimen collections, including urine and fecal samples, in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Demonstrate and use appropriate techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles for a variety of patient populations, including pediatric patients.
• Collect and store specimens in accordance with established laboratory procedures and protocols.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and specimen identification.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
• Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transit.
• Store specimens at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling and handling.
• Follow protocol-specific procedures to preserve the integrity of specimens from collection through transport.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in and complete annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure proper documentation of all specimens and procedures.
• Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information as appropriate to satisfy inquiries while maintaining confidentiality.
• Handle the full workflow for patients from start to finish, including drawing blood, processing specimens, entering orders, and ensuring proper completion of all steps.
• Work independently and manage all phlebotomy and specimen processing tasks as the sole on-site phlebotomy professional when required.
• Provide excellent customer service to patients and clinical staff, maintaining a professional and compassionate demeanor at all times.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
• Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric patients.
• High school diploma or GED completion.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• Strong phlebotomy skills, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Experience with specimen handling, including labeling, sample preparation, centrifugation, and storage.
• Ability to manage patient specimens from collection through processing, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
• Competence in data entry and order entry to ensure accurate and timely processing of laboratory tests.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety standards.
• Ability to read and understand physicians’ orders and translate them into accurate laboratory requisitions.
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
• Ability to work independently as the sole phlebotomy professional at a site, managing all related tasks without direct on-site supervision.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with geriatric patients is a plus.
• Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic health record or laboratory information systems.
• Background in medical assisting, laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or biological sample management.
• Experience handling patient specimens in a clinical or laboratory environment, including blood samples and other biological materials.
• Comfort working with pediatric patients and adapting communication and technique to meet their needs.
• Phlebotomy certification is not required but may be beneficial.
• Strong attention to detail when matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and entering orders.
• Ability to maintain composure and accuracy in a fast-paced clinical setting.
• Interest in potential temp-to-hire opportunities, depending on performance and business needs.

Work Environment

This role involves working in both rover and stationary clinic settings with defined schedules. The Neighborhood Health Clinic Rover schedule typically includes shifts on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and additional weekday shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., while the Jefferson Clinic Stationary schedule runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You travel between designated clinical locations as needed, and mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, requiring frequent interaction with individuals of varying ages, including pediatric patients. You use standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and electronic systems for order entry and data management, including Microsoft Office and potentially Cerner or similar platforms. The setting emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, and you participate in regular departmental trainings. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a healthcare and laboratory setting is expected.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Fort Wayne,IN.
