Job Description

The Production Supervisor serves as a Group Leader in a high-volume engine manufacturing facility, overseeing assembly and machining operations. This role leads daily manufacturing activities, drives safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance, and ensures that production goals are consistently met. The Production Supervisor manages and develops hourly team members, supports continuous improvement initiatives, and maintains a respectful, compliant, and safe work environment in a fast-paced, unionized setting.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage daily manufacturing operations for engine assembly and machining, adjusting plans as needed to meet changing demands.
• Drive performance in safety, quality, productivity, cost, and efficiency with a strong focus on SPQRCE metrics.
• Oversee production activities, including quality inspections, problem-solving, and built-in quality initiatives to ensure consistent product standards.
• Train, develop, and evaluate hourly team members to build a skilled and engaged workforce.
• Build and sustain high-performing teams by fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Motivate employees using standardized work methods and ensure adherence to established processes.
• Ensure team members receive thorough Job Instruction Training (JIT) and verify understanding and correct application on the floor.
• Coach, counsel, and mentor other Group Leaders to strengthen leadership capability across the organization.
• Lead and support Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) processes or similar operating systems to drive operational excellence.
• Serve as a resource for launch and pilot production activities, supporting new product introductions and process changes.
• Meet or exceed production schedules, cost targets, and quality requirements while maintaining high safety and housekeeping standards.
• Apply lean and synchronous manufacturing principles to reduce variation, eliminate waste, and improve process flow.
• Implement systems and countermeasures that prevent recurrence of known issues and drive long-term problem resolution.
• Maintain strong awareness of quality standards and expectations, ensuring all processes meet required quality specifications.
• Ensure consistent administration and understanding of National and Local UAW Agreements in daily operations.
• Foster a respectful, compliant work environment that supports positive labor relations and open communication.
• Promote and enforce safe work practices, including ergonomics, housekeeping, and hazard control.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workplace that supports efficient and safe operations.
• Ensure effective use of personnel, materials, and equipment to maximize throughput and minimize waste.
• Support continuous improvement in material flow, supply chain efficiency, and inventory management.
• Troubleshoot operational issues in real time and implement corrective actions to restore and improve performance.
• Utilize basic computer tools (email, documents, timekeeping systems) to manage schedules, reports, and team communication.
• Demonstrate flexibility by working rotating shifts, weekends, and significant overtime as required in a 24/7 operation.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience leading teams in a manufacturing, production, or supply chain environment, supervising approximately 20 or more people with at least 2+ years of leadership experience.
• Demonstrated ability to lead, train, develop, and evaluate hourly employees in a high-volume setting.
• Experience in supervision and leadership within quality, production, or materials/supply chain functions.
• Strong working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and variation reduction techniques.
• Proven ability to meet production schedules, cost targets, and quality requirements.
• Ability to promote and enforce safe work practices, including safety, ergonomics, and housekeeping standards.
• Experience working in a unionized environment, ideally with UAW-represented employees, and leading union teams.
• Ability to understand and consistently administer National and Local UAW Agreements.
• Skill in driving safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance with a focus on SPQRCE metrics.
• Demonstrated capability to manage change and ambiguity in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment.
• Competence in project scheduling, process improvement, and quality control in a production context.
• Basic computer skills, including email, word processing, and typing for daily administrative tasks.
• Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and significant overtime, including 6–7 days per week when required.
• Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and accountability management skills to effectively guide teams.
• Ability to troubleshoot operational issues and implement corrective actions promptly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred and may be required for certain advancement opportunities.
• Leadership experience as a Group Leader in quality, production, or materials/supply chain environments.
• Prior UAW experience is ideal but not required.
• Familiarity with Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) or similar structured manufacturing operating systems.
• Experience supporting launch or pilot production activities, particularly in automotive or high-volume manufacturing.
• Experience in automotive manufacturing or high-volume production environments focused on precision components.
• Exposure to built-in quality initiatives and methodologies such as DFSS or Red X, with related certifications considered a plus.
• Knowledge of timekeeping systems and workforce scheduling tools.
• Experience in leadership development, including coaching, mentoring, and performance management.
• Extensive experience in safety-focused environments with strict adherence to regulatory and internal safety standards.

Work Environment

This role is based in a high-volume engine manufacturing plant that produces advanced internal combustion engines for trucks and SUVs, including 3.0L turbo-diesel engines and next-generation small-block V8 engines. The facility handles engine assembly, piston and engine block machining, and rigorous quality checks, using components supplied from other specialized casting plants. The environment is fast-paced, unionized, and focused on precision, continuous improvement, strict safety standards, and on-time delivery to quality and cost targets. Operations run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and employees must be open to working all shifts, including rotating shifts and weekends. Shift assignments may include second shift (approximately 2:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.) and third shift (approximately 10:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m.). The role requires arriving approximately 30 minutes before shift start and being prepared for substantial overtime, often working 6–7 days per week. The workplace emphasizes a clean, organized, and hazard-free environment, with strong housekeeping and ergonomics practices. Team members use standardized work methods, lean tools, and structured manufacturing systems to support safe, efficient, and high-quality production in a collaborative, unionized setting.

This is a Contract position based out of Flint, MI.

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
