Structural MIG Welder / Fabricator

Job Description

This role is responsible for the production and fabrication of structural steel components for commercial buildings, with a focus on architectural pieces such as stairs and rails. You will use MIG welding, blueprint reading, and fabrication skills to fit, assemble, and weld structural elements to precise specifications in a busy structural steel shop.

Responsibilities

• Produce and fabricate structural steel components for commercial buildings, including architectural stairs and rails.
• Set up, fit, and assemble structural steel pieces accurately before welding, ensuring correct alignment and dimensions.
• Perform MIG welding on structural steel such as columns and I-beams in accordance with applicable standards and shop procedures.
• Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and weld symbols to determine fabrication requirements and weld locations.
• Use measuring tools, including tape measures, to verify dimensions to an accuracy of 1/16th of an inch.
• Grind, clean, and finish welds and fabricated parts to meet quality and appearance standards.
• Follow AWS D1.1 structural welding requirements as directed by shop procedures and supervisors.
• Operate fabrication shop equipment and tools safely and efficiently during cutting, fitting, and welding operations.
• Use basic computer systems to access work orders, drawings, and production information as required.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all safety policies and procedures in the structural steel shop.

Essential Skills

• At least 1 year of experience welding in a structural steel environment.
• Proficiency in MIG welding on structural steel components.
• Ability to fit up structural steel assemblies accurately prior to welding.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols.
• Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 structural welding standards.
• Ability to read a tape measure accurately to 1/16th of an inch.
• Basic computer knowledge and skills for accessing work orders and documentation.
• Experience working with structural elements such as columns and I-beams.
• Skill in grinding and basic fabrication operations in a production environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a structural steel or fabrication shop focused on commercial construction projects.
• Experience in fabricating architectural components such as stairs, rails, and related structural assemblies.
• Familiarity with production-oriented workflows in a fabrication setting.
• Comfort working from detailed drawings and specifications in a fast-paced shop environment.

Work Environment

You will work around structural steel, including columns and I-beams, and use MIG welding equipment, grinders, and standard fabrication tools. The environment is production-focused and requires attention to safety, proper handling of heavy materials, and consistent use of measuring tools and computer systems to follow work orders and drawings.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Albuquerque, NM.

The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $18.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
