Certified Welding Inspector

We are seeking a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to support weld quality in our fabrication operations. Reporting to the Quality Manager, the CWI verifies that welding work meets approved drawings, procedures, applicable codes, and customer requirements. The role works directly with welders, supervisors, Engineering, and Quality to identify issues early, document results, and support corrective action.

Responsibilities

Welding Inspection

· Inspect material preparation, joint fit-up, tack welds, welding in progress, and completed welds at required inspection points.

· Perform visual weld inspections against approved drawings, welding procedure specifications (WPSs), applicable code requirements, and customer specifications.

· Confirm weld size, location, profile, and workmanship, and verify that inspection and acceptance criteria are applied consistently.

· Identify nonconforming welds, clearly communicate required corrections, and reinspect repairs before acceptance.

Welding Controls and Qualifications

· Verify that the correct WPS is available and used for the work, including process, filler metal, base metal, position, and other applicable parameters.

· Confirm that welders are qualified for assigned work and help maintain current welder qualification and continuity records.

· Review welding documentation and coordinate questions or needed revisions with the Quality Manager, Engineering, and production leadership.

· Support qualification testing, procedure records, and outside testing or nondestructive examination when required by a project.

Quality Records and Corrective Action

· Complete inspection reports and maintain objective evidence of inspection, acceptance, repairs, and reinspection.

· Preserve part identification and traceability through inspection and communicate any missing or conflicting documentation.

· Document nonconformities under the company quality management system and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action.

· Provide inspection records and technical support for customer reviews and internal or external quality audits.

Production Collaboration and Safety

· Coordinate with fabrication leads and supervisors to plan inspection hold points and resolve weld quality issues without unnecessary delays.

· Explain inspection findings and acceptance criteria to welders in a clear, practical manner and share recurring trends with production leadership.

· Follow shop safety requirements and maintain a safe presence around welding, lifting, and material handling operations.

Qualifications

· Current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector credential required.

· At least three years of experience inspecting structural or industrial fabrication welds in a production environment preferred.

· Working knowledge of applicable welding codes, particularly AWS D1.1, and the ability to apply project-specific acceptance criteria.

· Ability to read fabrication drawings, weld symbols, WPSs, procedure qualification records, and welder qualification records.

· Proficiency with visual inspection tools, measurement, and clear, accurate inspection documentation.

· Experience with ISO 9001 quality systems and AISC fabrication requirements preferred.

· Strong communication skills and sound judgment when working with welders, supervisors, and customers.

Additional Requirements

· Ability to work regularly on the shop floor, including standing, walking, and accessing welds safely for inspection.

· Ability to manage multiple fabrication jobs and inspection priorities while maintaining accurate records.

· Willingness to maintain the CWI credential and stay current with applicable code and customer requirements.
