Position Summary

As relentless champions of hope, Fight Colorectal Cancer relies on strong financial stewardship to fund breakthrough research, drive policy change, and support patients. The Staff Accountant safeguards the organization's financial health and integrity by managing day-to-day accounting operations, processing payroll, leading monthly financial reporting to the Board of Directors, and overseeing grants and contracts. This role calls for anexpert in nonprofit accounting who holds every report to an error-free standard and communicates the organization's financial position clearly to boardand staff members. The Staff Accountant works in close partnership with the Budget Analyst, with each reviewing the other's work to catch errors and ensure consistency before anything is finalized or shared. As a skilled communicator and teacher, the Staff Accountant explains financial reports in accessible terms and helps colleagues understand the numbers behind the mission, ensuring timely, accurate financial information and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly financial reporting to the Board of Directors, preparing and presenting clear, error-free statements, dashboards, and variance analysis, verified through rigorous review and quality-control checks, that translate detailed data into actionable insight.
  • Meet monthly with the Treasurer to review financial statements, budget-to-actual performance, cash position, and emerging risks, and to prepare for Board reporting.
  • Lead monthly meetings to inform employees of the organization's financial standing, presenting results in clear, accessible terms, and explain reports and train staff members as needed.
  • Partner with the Budget Analyst to cross-review each other's budgets, forecasts, variance analyses, and financial reports, confirming accuracy and consistency with the general ledger before work is finalized or shared.
  • Oversee grants and contracts, including tracking spend against funder budgets, ensuring compliance with grant terms, and preparing financial reports for grant and contract reporting.
  • Manage restricted and unrestricted funds and functional expense allocation across program, management, and fundraising categories.
  • Process and administer payroll accurately and on schedule, including related records, deductions, and reconciliations.
  • Administer and reconcile employee retirement plan contributions and coordinate related reporting and compliance.
  • Maintain the general ledger and process accounts payable and accounts receivable with accurate coding.
  • Prepare month-end close-outs, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, and general ledger accounts, and reconcile revenue from fundraising events, campaigns, and donation platforms against the donor database.
  • Support year-end close, the annual audit, and Form 990 preparation with documentation and supporting schedules.
  • Lead budgeting and forecasting in partnership with the CEO and Budget Analyst.
  • Maintain separation of duties in accordance with Fight CRC's financial policies and internal controls.
  • Maintain compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable payroll, retirement, and grant regulations.
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready financial documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on payroll processing and administration, with expert-level mastery of accounting principles and practice.
  • Experience preparing and presenting financial reports to a board, leadership, or funders, including leading recurring meetings.
  • Experience overseeing grants and contracts, including grant budget tracking and compliance reporting.
  • Experience administering and reconciling retirement plan contributions.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including summary and management reporting.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial compliance, including fund accounting and functional expense allocation.
  • Understanding of internal controls and separation of duties.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization, with a proven record of producing accurate, error-free financial reports.
  • Experience working collaboratively with other finance staff, including peer review of financial work.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to explain complex financial information to non-financial audiences and to teach, train, or mentor others.
  • Ability to handle confidential financial and payroll information with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nonprofit or fund accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting audits and Form 990 preparation.
  • Familiarity with donor databases/CRM and fundraising or event revenue reconciliation.
