Traveling Maintenance Mechanic

Location:Louisiana, Texas & Mississippi
Position Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

B&D Contracting is seeking an experienced and dependable Maintenance Mechanic for work in industrial plants and oilfields throughout Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi.

The Maintenance Mechanic inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains machinery, gas and diesel engines, pumps, compressors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, pressure control equipment, and related facility systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.

This position performs preventive and corrective maintenance, diagnoses equipment failures, replaces worn or damaged components, and assists with equipment installation and servicing. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical troubleshooting skills, hands-on repair experience, and a safety-minded approach to plant and field maintenance.

Must Have
  • Minimum 3 years of experienceas a Maintenance Mechanic, Industrial Mechanic, Equipment Mechanic, Millwright, or similar mechanical maintenance position.
  • Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining gas and diesel engines.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience performing preventive and corrective maintenance on machinery and equipment.
  • Experience maintaining pumps, compressors, and other rotating equipment, including checking alignment, lubrication, vibration, and leaks.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting pressure control systems, including regulators, control valves, actuators, gauges, and related hydraulic or pneumatic components.[RV1]
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic electrical problems within the employee’s training and authorization; refer specialized electrical and instrumentation work to qualified personnel.
  • Experience repairing or replacing bearings, belts, chains, gears, seals, hoses, pumps, valves, motors, and related components.
  • Ability to perform routine lubrication, fluid checks, adjustments, and equipment servicing.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to read equipment manuals, mechanical drawings, schematics, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and manufacturer specifications relevant to assigned equipment.
  • Ability to identify mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Knowledge of equipment isolation, lockout/tagout, stored-energy control, and safe depressurization procedures before servicing equipment.
  • Strong safety awareness and willingness to follow all company, OSHA, and job-site safety requirements.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to work independently or as part of a maintenance team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in industrial plants, refineries, petrochemical facilities, oilfields, or oil and gas production and service operations.
  • Advanced experience diagnosing and repairing gas and diesel engines.
  • Experience maintaining heavy equipment and construction machinery.
  • Welding, cutting, grinding, and basic fabrication experience.
  • Advanced hydraulic and pneumatic troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience with oilfield pressure control equipment such as wellhead valves, choke assemblies, manifolds, or blowout preventers (BOPs), when included in the client assignment.
  • Experience with pump and compressor overhauls, shaft alignment, mechanical seals, and equipment startup checks.
  • Advanced electrical diagnostics or instrumentation experience, subject to applicable qualifications and authorization.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs, computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), and work orders.
  • Experience performing emergency equipment and machinery repairs.
  • Ability to maintain accurate inspection, repair, maintenance, and parts records.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Current H2S awareness, site safety orientation, TWIC, or other client-required credentials, where applicable; ability to complete required training before assignment.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on industrial plant and oilfield machinery, gas and diesel engines, pumps, compressors, and mechanical systems.
  • Inspect equipment for wear, corrosion, leaks, abnormal vibration, overheating, and malfunction; identify unsafe equipment and report it for removal from service.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, pressure control, and basic electrical problems within assigned qualifications.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and service pressure control equipment, including regulators, control and relief valves, actuators, gauges, and pressure switches, within the assigned scope.
  • Check component pressure ratings and compatibility; perform leak and pressure testing only under approved procedures with suitable test equipment and required safeguards.
  • Adjust approved pressure settings only when authorized; coordinate relief-device testing, calibration, or certification with qualified personnel. Never bypass protective devices.[RV2]
  • Repair or replace bearings, belts, chains, gears, couplings, seals, hoses, valves, motors, and related components using approved parts and manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform scheduled servicing, lubrication, fluid and filter changes, operating checks, and preventive maintenance.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns, communicate repair needs and downtime, and coordinate safe shutdown and return to service with operations personnel.
  • Assist with installation, alignment, setup, and authorized functional testing of new or repaired equipment; restore guards before return to service.
  • Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and basic fabrication only when trained and authorized and after required hot-work permits and safeguards are in place.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, parts, and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
  • Document inspections, repairs, parts used, equipment readings, test results, and unresolved defects in maintenance records or work orders.
  • Follow approved isolation, lockout/tagout, and stored-energy control procedures; verify safe isolation and depressurization before opening or servicing equipment.
  • Participate in pre-job hazard reviews and follow applicable permits for line opening, hot work, confined spaces, and work at height; perform these tasks only when trained and authorized.
  • Follow site procedures for H2S and other hazardous gases, flammable materials, chemical exposure, gas monitoring, PPE, emergency response, and spill prevention.
  • Use approved rigging and lifting practices within assigned qualifications, maintain housekeeping, and stop work when conditions are unsafe.
  • Perform additional maintenance and mechanical duties within the employee’s training, qualifications, and assigned scope.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in various positions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds when required; use team lifting or mechanical aids for heavier or awkward loads.[RV3]
  • Ability to safely access and service machinery, use tools, and work around equipment under required safeguards.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in noisy, dusty, hot, or restricted areas; confined-space entry and elevated work require applicable training, authorization, permits, and protective equipment.
  • Ability to wear required PPE. If an assignment requires respiratory protection, complete applicable medical clearance, fit testing, and training before use.
