Position Summary
The Saw Operator safely and accurately operates industrial metal-cutting saws to process stainless steel, nickel alloy, and other metal products to work-order and customer specifications. The operator verifies material identity, dimensions, cut lengths, tolerances, quantities, and job requirements; maintains heat/lot traceability; minimizes scrap; and supports production throughput without sacrificing safety or quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up and operate horizontal and/or vertical band saws and other authorized metal-cutting equipment.
- Safely handle long, heavy, bundled, or irregularly shaped metal products.
- Review work orders, cut instructions, drawings, pick tickets, and customer specifications before beginning work.
- Verify correct material before cutting, including grade/alloy, size, heat/lot number, quantity, and identification.
- Measure and set cut lengths using tape measures, calipers, micrometers, or other approved measuring devices.
- Select or confirm appropriate blades, speeds, feeds, and machine settings based on material type, size, and job requirements.
- Perform first-piece and in-process dimensional checks to ensure cuts meet specified tolerances.
- Maintain material identification and heat/lot traceability throughout processing, including remnants and drops.
- Accurately label completed pieces, remnants, and scrap according to company procedures.
- Monitor saw operation and make appropriate adjustments to maintain cut quality, productivity, and equipment performance.
- Identify and report incorrect material, dimensional issues, equipment problems, or other discrepancies before continuing production.
- Record completed quantities, material usage, scrap, remnants, labor, and production transactions accurately in the Eniteo system.
- Use forklifts, overhead cranes, hoists, and other authorized equipment to load/unload saws and move material.
- Perform routine operator-level inspections and basic preventive maintenance, including blades, coolant, guards, and work areas.
- Meet established production expectations without sacrificing safety, accuracy, traceability, or quality.
- Follow all safety, quality, lockout/tagout, machine-guarding, PPE, and material-handling procedures.
- Perform other warehouse duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous saw operation, machining, metal fabrication, manufacturing, or metals service center experience preferred.
- Stainless steel, nickel alloy, carbon steel, or specialty-metals cutting experience preferred for experienced positions.
- Ability to read work orders, cut instructions, basic drawings, and material identification.
- Ability to accurately use tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and related measuring tools.
- Basic math skills including decimals, fractions, and measurement conversions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to consistently work within specified tolerances.
- Forklift and/or overhead crane experience preferred; company training may be provided.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, reach, climb, push, pull, and work around industrial equipment and material racks.
- Ability to lift and carry materials or supplies within company-established lifting limits.
- Ability to work in a warehouse environment that may be hot, cold, noisy, dusty, or dirty.
- Ability to safely work around forklifts, overhead cranes, trucks, saws, and heavy metal products.
- Regular use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
