Job Shadowing @ Jefferson Healthcare

Jefferson Healthcare is committed to supporting the development of the future healthcare workforce by offering job shadow opportunities to individuals exploring careers in healthcare.Priority will be given to students residing in Jefferson County and/or attending local educational institutions.

In addition to completing your application, you must also:

  1. Submit a Cover Letter. Please provide a brief cover letter explaining why you are interested in a Job Shadow at Jefferson Healthcare, the healthcare careers you are interested in exploring, what you have done in your past that demonstrates a high level of professionalism and responsibility as well as what you hope to learn from the experience.
  2. Provide a Professional Reference. This can be a teacher, school counselor, coach, employer, supervisor, or another adult who can speak to your professionalism and readiness for the experience. Please do not use a personal reference.
  3. Complete a Mandatory Orientation. Orientation will cover HIPAA and confidentiality, Infection Prevention, professionalism, expectations in the healthcare environment, and preparation for your Job Shadow.

Due to high demand and limited opportunities in some clinical areas, many students may not receive their first-choice placement. We ask that you come into the program open to exploring the many different careers available in healthcare.

The following guidelines and rules apply to all job shadow situations and participants:

  • -Job Shadows may not exceed 20 hours, most will be limited to 8-10 hours.
  • -Applicants must be at least 16 years old and enrolled in high school or a college program. Applicants under the age of 18 must have written permission from a parent or guardian.
  • Applicants must provide proof of medical health care coverage.
  • Job Shadows are observational and hands-off. Students may not perform or assist with patient care.
  • Students must be accompanied at all times by a Jefferson Healthcare employee while shadowing.
  • Scheduling is based primarily on department availability and may require you to adjust your schedule to accommodate the department's available dates and times.
  • Patient consent is required before observing in areas where patient contact may occur. Many times patients will not consent and you may have to step away from the area.
  • Students must follow all Jefferson Healthcare policies, including HIPAA, confidentiality, Code of Conduct, and Standards of Behavior.
  • Background checks and required documentation must be completed before participating.
  • Students will be required to wear a mask in patient-facing areas based on JH infection prevention recommendations.
  • Required vaccinations include MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella), Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis), and Varicella.

Job shadows shallnotbe permitted in the following JH departments/areas:

  • Family Birth Center (FBC)
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Emergency Department (ED)
  • Any department where express, direct patient consent prior to shadowing cannot be received

Due to the overwhelming interest in our job shadow program and the impact coordinating these experiences has on our clinical teams, we have had to limit participation to individuals who are local to our community or have an existing affiliation with Jefferson Healthcare, such as current employees, students with an affiliated educational program, or other established Jefferson Healthcare partners. If anything changes, we will update this post.
