Summary: Overall purpose of the position/impact on company/end result expected to be accomplished:

Responsible for product development, design, and future technological direction, for standard and value-added drive products (specification, design, conformance verification, technical documentation, manufacturing support, and product enhancements) to assist in achieving the growth and success of the medium voltage drive business.

  • Responsible for the development, design and transition of standard and value-added drive products to the marketing, engineering, and manufacturing organizations.
  • Provide technical direction, planning, and support on product implementation, detail design, certification, and design processes, and test equipment such as switchgear design.
  • Assists in product marketing, application engineering, manufacturing, training, and technical support in higher-level support and consulting requirements for priority projects.
  • Maintain, report, and adhere to specific product and project schedules and deadlines.

Authority to act / complexity of work:

  • Plans and prioritize daily tasks without supervision to meet established deadlines.
  • Possesses broad product knowledge and engineering ability to resolve complex questions related to engineering work.
  • Defines bill of material structures for ease of use in manufacturing.
  • Position is guided by AID's Operation's Mission statement, quality policy, and quality objectives and by widely accepted industry standards.
  • The next level manager monitors workload.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and modification to Solidworks models of Drives, switchgear and panels
  • Investigates, approves, and implements changes to product, via ECO (Engineering Change Order), to resolve issues or to improve product design.
  • Design/modify sheet metal and weldment drawings, as required, to AID mechanical drawing standards.
  • Create 2D parts drawings from 3D models to AID mechanical drawing standards
  • Generate/modify bills of materials in the current MRP system.
  • Troubleshoot assembly issues with mechanical designs on the factory floor.
  • Periodically perform incoming inspections of vendor manufactured parts
  • Perform mechanical strength calculations and/or simulations if required.
  • Support vendors on parts that they designed.
  • Work with factory floor assemblers in troubleshooting parts/assembly issues
  • Actively participate in design reviews.
  • Check designs and parts drawings of others in the mechanical design group.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Organizational Relationships:

Internal (engineering peers, engineering management, supply chain management, product management, sales, service, IT, strategic sourcing, inside sales, operations personnel, committees, etc.):

  • Provide input on the technological direction for drive products to marketing and engineering organizations.
  • Provide input and assist operations for drive panel manufacturing.
  • Provide assistance to technical training, marketing, and engineering organizations with respect to training materials, equipment, and instructional services.
  • Provide assistance to the service organization in priority level technical support.
  • Provide assistance with the MV Drives Application Engineering and MV Drive Sales Force with respect to technical issues.

External (customers, vendors, trade associations, etc.):

  • External approval agencies such as UL.
  • 3rd party service providers and vendors
  • 3rd party vendors related to Drives key components (Switchgear, etc)

Requirements:

  • 5+ years design experience.
  • BSME or 8+ years equivalent experience.
  • Experience with drive products and panels, Experience with UL347, UL508 and UL50 is helpful
  • Ability to plan, organize, set priorities, and resolve issues quickly to meet customer needs
  • Excellent working knowledge of Solidworks.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Very Good knowledge of sheet metal and welded structure design.
  • Knowledge of metal fabrication, forming, and welding shop practices and procedures.
  • Industrial automation industry experience.
  • Mechanical stress and load calculation are desirable as well as experience with Solidworks Simulation tools.
  • Ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Excellent computer skills with a fundamental understanding of Microsoft suite of programs.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural work environment
  • Motivated self-starter that can take general directions and move ahead to complete the assigned tasks in a timely manner to meet project deadlines.
  • MRP/ERP system experience such as Sage is desired but not required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work Environment: General work environment is a controlled office environment. May be asked to visit customer facilities, which include office and factory environments. Factory environments may include exposure to weather and temperature extremes, cramped spaces, loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dust, and may present height and work safety hazards. Extended work hours may be required occasionally to meet project deadlines. Access to all AID work sites and locations are required for this position. Strict adherence to the corporate safety standards is required.
  • Physical Effort: Physical movement required for the job includes walking, standing and sitting for long periods of time, and lifting. Physical strength required for lifting is 50lbs (weight of Drive products and test equipment). Dexterity of hands and fingers for computer work and using test equipment is required. Coordination of hand and eye is required with repetitive motion associated with computer work.
  • Mental Effort: Concentration and intensity for prolonged mental effort with limited opportunity for breaks. Handling the complexity of decision-making, problem solving, analytical thinking, conceptual thinking, and time pressure for making decisions is required.
  • Communication: Clear and concise verbal and written communication is required to all internal and external parties as indicated above.
