Tekla Detailer

J.Riley Recruitment

Houston, TX • 10/3/2026

Job Description

Job Description
Position Overview

Our client is seeking a Tekla Detailer to develop accurate 3D models, fabrication drawings, and erection drawings for pre-engineered metal building projects. This role will translate engineering requirements and project concepts into detailed construction and fabrication documentation while coordinating closely with engineering, project management, and other internal stakeholders. The position may be based in the Houston area or performed remotely, depending on the candidate's location and experience.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on Tekla Structures experience specifically within the pre-engineered metal building industry. General structural-steel or commercial-building Tekla experience alone will not provide the specialized PEMB background needed for this position. The successful candidate will understand metal building systems, framing, connections, and drawing requirements and will also have an opportunity to contribute to the continued development of the company's Tekla standards and workflows as the platform becomes more deeply integrated into its detailing operations.

Why Join Our Client?

Our client is an established provider of engineered metal building solutions serving industrial and infrastructure applications. The company delivers highly customized projects that require close coordination between engineering, detailing, project management, material supply, and construction, giving technical professionals exposure to substantially more complex work than conventional commercial metal buildings.

This position offers experienced Tekla professionals the ability to work remotely while contributing to specialized PEMB projects and helping shape an evolving Tekla environment. Rather than stepping into a rigid, mature drafting system, the Detailer will have meaningful input into how modeling standards, detailing practices, and production workflows continue to develop.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed 3D models in Tekla Structures for pre-engineered metal building projects from initial design information through construction and fabrication documentation.
  • Produce accurate fabrication, shop, approval, and erection drawings that reflect engineering requirements and applicable metal building standards.
  • Coordinate detailing requirements with engineering, project management, and other internal functions to maintain alignment throughout project development.
  • Review architectural, structural, and engineering information to identify conflicts, discrepancies, missing information, or constructability concerns before they affect downstream work.
  • Perform quality reviews of models, drawings, and shop details to verify dimensions, fit-up, connections, and overall accuracy.
  • Incorporate metal building system information and project-specific requirements into Tekla models and drawing packages.
  • Maintain organized project files and documentation while managing assigned detailing work against established schedules.
  • Contribute to the refinement of Tekla standards, templates, and detailing processes to improve consistency, accuracy, and production efficiency.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience within the metal building industry.
  • 3+ years of current Tekla Structures experience specifically supporting pre-engineered metal building projects.
  • Strong working knowledge of PEMB systems, including primary and secondary framing, roof and wall systems, bracing, and structural connections.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and modify 3D models and detailed 2D fabrication and erection drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and engineering drawings and translate technical requirements into accurate detailing deliverables.
  • Experience identifying drawing, modeling, and design conflicts and coordinating resolution with engineering or other project stakeholders.
  • Ability to independently manage assigned work, maintain accuracy, and meet project deadlines in either an office or remote work environment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills for coordinating technical information across project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience coordinating directly with engineering and manufacturing teams on pre-engineered metal building projects.
  • Familiarity with metal building design data or related PEMB engineering software used alongside Tekla.
  • Additional experience with CAD or structural detailing platforms.
