Robert Half has partnered with a respected nonprofit organization seeking a Controller to lead its accounting and finance operations. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, grant compliance, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, and audit preparation. This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys developing staff, partnering with department heads, and translating financial information into actionable business insights.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end close, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements, reporting packages, and financial analysis for executive leadership and the Board.
- Lead annual operating and capital budget preparation, including budget-to-actual analysis and forecasting.
- Manage financial reporting for government grants and other funding sources, ensuring compliance with applicable requirements.
- Partner with program directors and department heads on budgeting, expense management, and financial performance.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and year-end reporting requirements.
- Oversee billing and revenue recognition processes and maintain effective internal controls.
- Develop and improve accounting policies, procedures, and reporting processes.
- Provide financial guidance and training to non-finance staff to support informed decision-making.
- Supervise and develop accounting staff while promoting accuracy, accountability, and collaboration.
- Support risk management activities, retirement plan administration, and other financial initiatives.

- Bachelor's degree in Accounting required.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Required experience in nonprofit and/or healthcare accounting.
- Experience with Connecticut state agency funding and reporting requirements (CORE CT) strongly preferred, ie. DMHAS, DCF, DOC, or DDS.
- Strong background in month-end close, financial statement preparation, grant reporting, budgeting, and staff management.
- Experience presenting financial results and explaining accounting concepts to non-finance stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting software preferred.
- CPA is a plus.
