Job Title: Multi-Axis CNC Machinist

Job Description

This role is ideal for an experienced, hands-on Multi-Axis CNC Machinist who thrives in a fast-paced job shop environment. You will independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC equipment to produce high-quality precision parts, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to engineering specifications. Aerospace machining experience is a strong plus and will be highly valued in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate multi-axis CNC machines, including 3-, 4-, and 5-axis equipment, to produce precision components to specification.
  • Perform complete machine setups, including fixture setup, tool changes, tool offsets, and work offsets to ensure optimal machining performance.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), to plan and execute machining operations.
  • Make minor program edits at the machine using G-code to adjust feeds, speeds, and tool paths as needed for part quality and efficiency.
  • Perform first-article inspections and in-process quality checks using precision measuring tools to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, programs, and setups, and implement corrective actions to maintain quality and productivity.
  • Apply proper machining techniques, including climb milling and conventional milling, and optimize feed and speed settings for different materials and operations.
  • Utilize and work with multi-axis CNC lathes and mills, including Mazak lathes and Mazak mills, and related controls such as Grob and M3 spindle operations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following shop standards and best practices for equipment care and housekeeping.
  • Meet production schedules and throughput targets while consistently maintaining quality standards and complying with safety procedures.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, taking ownership of assigned jobs from setup through completion.
  • Perform changeovers efficiently between different jobs and part numbers to support a dynamic job shop environment.

Essential Skills

  • 35 years of CNC machining experience in a job shop environment.
  • Proven experience setting up and operating multi-axis CNC machines (3-, 4-, and/or 5-axis).
  • Strong ability to independently perform machine setup, including fixture setup and tool changes.
  • Demonstrated capability to perform tool offsets and work offsets without supervision.
  • Basic CNC programming skills or the ability to perform program editing at the machine using G-code.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including proficiency with GD&T and understanding of engineering drawings.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and related inspection equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining issues related to tooling, programs, and setups in a production environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of quality and productivity.
  • Must be able to provide and use personal machining tools required for daily work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in aerospace machining or working to aerospace-level quality standards is a strong plus.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC lathes and mills, including Mazak lathes and Mazak mills.
  • Familiarity with Grob machining centers and M3 spindle operations.
  • Understanding and practical application of climb milling and conventional milling techniques.
  • Knowledge of feed and speed optimization for various materials and cutting conditions.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced job shop environment with frequent changeovers and varied part runs.

Work Environment

The role is focused on multi-axis CNC machining and precision part production. The shop environment is fast-paced, with frequent changeovers and a variety of parts and setups, requiring flexibility and attention to detail. Work involves standing at machines, handling tools and fixtures, and using precision measuring instruments throughout the day. A clean, organized work area is expected, and adherence to established safety practices and shop standards is required. Typical attire consists of practical, machine-shop-appropriate clothing suitable for a manufacturing environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Huntsville, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $43.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
