Job Description
As an Engineering Technician, you build and test complex mechanical and electrical systems in a cleanroom environment while supporting process improvements, engineering tests, lean initiatives, and quality enhancements. You play a key role in manufacturing high-level semiconductor systems, troubleshooting technical issues, and contributing to the continuous improvement of products and production processes.
Responsibilities
- Build and test complex mechanical and electrical systems in a cleanroom environment according to established specifications and procedures.
- Produce products in accordance with defined quality standards and technical specifications.
- Observe, document, and report recurring or ongoing issues in product construction or operation, and support efforts to resolve these problems.
- Contribute to the improvement of products and processes by sharing observations, suggestions, and technical insights.
- Manufacture and deliver high-level, complex systems by following established production procedures and work instructions.
- Identify, analyze, and solve technical problems that arise during assembly, test, or integration.
- Serve as a reference point for problem solving within your area of expertise and set a positive example for other team members.
- Oversee the full process from assembly through testing, ensuring all steps meet quality and safety standards.
- Actively participate in pilot production for new products and support the transition from pilot to volume production.
- Develop and improve technical product documentation (TPD), processes, records, and other relevant production documentation.
- Evaluate new procedures before implementation to understand their impact on the production process and propose improvements where needed.
- Generate constructive ideas for product and process improvements and communicate them effectively to the team.
- Acquire and maintain in-depth knowledge of new and existing products, processes, modifications, sub-modules, and complete systems.
- Understand the correlation between individual modules and the overall system, including the relationship with other sub-systems.
- Share relevant technical expertise with colleagues to support knowledge transfer and skills development within the team.
- Support strong teamwork by actively participating in problem solving, contributing ideas, and assisting with departmental tasks.
- Coordinate activities assigned in the production plan and adjust priorities based on the practical situation on the floor.
- Monitor and control the use of tools, materials, and equipment to ensure availability, proper use, and care.
- Perform mechanical assembly and testing tasks using appropriate tools, fixtures, and test equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams to build and troubleshoot electro-mechanical systems.
- Use hand tools, test equipment, and computer systems to perform assembly, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and inspection activities.
- Conduct testing and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical, and electronic components and systems to identify root causes of issues.
- Perform inspections to verify that assemblies and systems meet specifications and quality requirements.
- Support lean manufacturing initiatives, such as 5S, Kaizen, and value stream mapping, to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
- Assist in prototype builds and engineering tests, providing feedback on design, manufacturability, and performance.
- Document work performed, test results, and any issues encountered in accordance with production and quality procedures.
Essential Skills
- Experience building and testing mechanical and electrical or electro-mechanical systems.
- Mechanical assembly and testing skills with strong mechanical aptitude and a mechanically inclined mindset.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Hands-on experience using hand tools and test equipment for assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Proficiency in testing and troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.
- Experience working with electro-mechanical systems, wiring, and electronics.
- Ability to perform inspection activities to ensure products meet specifications and quality standards.
- Familiarity with cleanroom practices and willingness to work in a cleanroom environment.
- Basic computer skills to operate production-related software, documentation tools, and test systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues on the production floor.
- Ability to coordinate tasks according to a production plan and manage priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with engineering, production, and quality colleagues.
- Education such as a diploma, certification, associate degree, or bachelors degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Chemical, or a related field, or equivalent manufacturing/technical experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Manufacturing internship or co-op experience, particularly in engineering or technical environments.
- Lean manufacturing training, such as Introduction to Lean, 5S, Kaizen, or Value Stream Mapping (VSM), is preferred.
- Experience supporting process improvement, engineering testing, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Experience or interest in the semiconductor industry and complex high-tech systems.
- Ability to understand the relationship between sub-modules and complete systems and how they interact with other sub-systems.
- Capability to contribute to the development and improvement of technical product documentation and production records.
- Experience participating in pilot production and supporting the transition to volume manufacturing.
- Willingness to work a compressed workweek schedule on day or night shifts.
- Motivation to grow into more advanced engineering responsibilities over time.
Work Environment
You work in a high-tech semiconductor manufacturing environment with a strong focus on quality, precision, and continuous improvement. Most activities take place in a cleanroom, where you handle complex mechanical and electrical assemblies using hand tools, test equipment, and computer-based systems. The role follows a compressed workweek (CWW) schedule with 12-hour shifts. Day shifts (D1 and D2) run from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with every other Wednesday worked, while night shifts (N1 and N2) run from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. with every other Saturday worked. The structure of the schedule alternates between specific days each week, providing extended periods of time off between shifts. New hires complete approximately two weeks of training, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., before transitioning to the CWW schedule. The environment emphasizes lean manufacturing, teamwork, and continuous learning, offering opportunities to grow into more advanced engineering roles. Dress and conduct must comply with cleanroom protocols, including appropriate cleanroom attire and adherence to strict contamination-control procedures
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilton, CT.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
