This Project Engineer role supports a self-performing general contractor that delivers civil, structural, and mechanical construction services for industrial markets. The position is based in Brighton and focuses on the rigging division, working on projects that range from ground-up construction and renovations to maintenance, outage-related work, equipment installations, repair and maintenance, demolition, and various industrial construction initiatives. The Project Engineer partners closely with Project Managers to handle site safety, RFIs, document control, scheduling, and other operational tasks while helping drive projects from conception through completion.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee and direct construction projects from initial conception through final completion, ensuring scope, schedule, and quality objectives are met.
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to define and confirm project specifications and requirements.
  • Manage all aspects of document control, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, and plan revisions, to maintain accurate and current project records.
  • Assist in preparing, maintaining, and reporting on the master project schedule, ensuring alignment with project milestones and deliverables.
  • Apply knowledge of design scheduling, construction scheduling, program scheduling, and cost and resource loading, including developing detailed work breakdown structures (WBS), milestones, activity definitions, logical sequences, durations, dependencies, interdependencies, and contingencies.
  • Coordinate and lead project-related meetings with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients to review progress, address issues, and align on next steps.
  • Manage prime contracts and subcontracts, including scope clarification, tracking changes, and supporting contractual compliance.
  • Take responsibility for the overall direction, completion, and financial outcome of assigned projects, working closely with Project Managers and field teams.
  • Review jobs with estimators to support the bid process, including reviewing and signing off on estimates prior to proposal completion.
  • Create overall job schedules and issue schedules, work orders, and budgets to both office and field personnel.
  • Prepare detailed project status reports and ensure that all work adheres to contract specifications and company standards.
  • Report and document all changes to each job, including change orders, submittals, plan set changes, and corresponding updates to work orders and contracts.
  • Monitor materials and work completed to prepare and issue pay requests for each job prior to billing due dates.
  • Act as an intermediary for all communications between owners, engineers, and internal personnel to maintain and strengthen relationships.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions in accordance with quality and safety programs when issues arise.
  • Ensure customer quality standards are met by overseeing quality processes and documentation.
  • Conduct quality inspections on-site to verify compliance with project specifications and safety requirements.
  • Support construction safety efforts on-site in coordination with Project Managers and field leadership.
  • Effectively manage and prioritize workload across 15 concurrent projects, adjusting focus based on project needs and timelines.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a Project Engineer for a general contractor or heavy civil firm.
  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering (Engineering preferred).
  • Experience in construction management, including industrial construction and work with general contractors.
  • Proficiency with RFIs, change orders, and construction administration processes.
  • Demonstrated project engineering experience supporting civil, concrete, heavy civil, and industrial construction projects.
  • Strong project management and project coordination skills, including planning, organizing, and executing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including MS Word and Excel.
  • Proficiency with Adobe software for document handling and review.
  • Experience using scheduling software such as Microsoft Project and Primavera P6 or similar tools.
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices and the ability to support safe field operations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally, approximately 20% within the state.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with project stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail with a demonstrated desire to learn, improve, and deliver high-quality work.
  • A competitive, results-driven mindset validated through references.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with industrial and heavy commercial (education) projects and heavy civil project work.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred.
  • Ability to travel throughout Michigan and the broader Midwest region (approximately 20% in-state, less than 5% out-of-state).
  • At least 3 years of experience developing, maintaining, and updating schedules in Microsoft Project and Primavera P6 or comparable platforms.
  • Knowledge and experience supporting modifications and upgrades to existing facilities and new construction projects in automotive, electric generating (hydroelectric, coal, and gas), steel mills, manufacturing, and water/wastewater facilities.
  • Familiarity with industrial construction services such as civil and concrete work, machinery installation, structural steel erection, heavy rigging, material handling, specialty welding, and industrial maintenance.
  • Experience working in or with full-service industrial contractors that self-perform civil, structural, and mechanical scopes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a family-oriented, community-focused company environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
Work Environment

The role is based out of an office in Brighton, Michigan. The Project Engineer typically works 5060 hours per week, often in 10-hour days, with schedules that may vary depending on project demands and outage timelines. Approximately 70% of the time is spent in the office, coordinating project documentation, schedules, and communications, while about 20% involves travel to project sites throughout Michigan and less than 5% involves travel to out-of-state locations. All travel expenses are covered. The organization operates as a second-generation, family-owned, full-service industrial contractor with a team of roughly 4560 employees and strong ties to the automotive, heavy industrial, industrial process, manufacturing, power generation, and wastewater sectors. Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $75000.00 - $90000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
