Job Description

This role focuses on safely directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic through active construction and utility work zones while protecting work crews and the traveling public. You work outdoors in all weather conditions, set up and maintain traffic control equipment, and communicate clearly with team members to ensure a safe and efficient flow of traffic around job sites.

Responsibilities

• Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic through active construction and utility work zones using stop/slow paddles, hand signals, and communication devices.
• Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices including signs, cones, barrels, barricades, and temporary lane closures.
• Monitor traffic patterns throughout the shift and adjust positioning or signals as needed to maintain safe and efficient vehicle flow.
• Communicate clearly with fellow flaggers, supervisors, and work crews via radio or other communication devices to coordinate traffic control activities.
• Follow approved traffic control plans, company safety procedures, and regulatory guidelines at all times.
• Assist in maintaining safe work zones for employees, contractors, pedestrians, and motorists by identifying and mitigating hazards.
• Inspect work zones regularly during the day to identify potential safety issues and promptly report hazards to supervisors.
• Complete required paperwork, timesheets, and safety documentation accurately and on time.
• Attend daily safety briefings and toolbox talks to stay informed about site conditions, safety expectations, and work plans.
• Represent the company in a professional manner while interacting with the public, responding to questions courteously and maintaining a calm demeanor.

Essential Skills

• Experience in general labor or construction-related work environments such as road crews, utilities, landscaping, warehouse, security, military, or similar fields is highly beneficial.
• Ability to direct traffic safely using stop/slow paddles, hand signals, and communication devices.
• Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with fellow flaggers, supervisors, and work crews.
• Situational awareness and the ability to remain alert and react quickly to changing traffic and site conditions.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in busy work zones.
• Reliable attendance and punctuality to ensure consistent coverage of traffic control operations.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
• Ability to work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, and changing weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry traffic control equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Comfort working around construction equipment and active roadways while maintaining a safety-first mindset.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is preferred.
• Valid drivers license and reliable transportation are preferred.
• Ability to obtain required traffic control and flagger certifications; paid training and certification opportunities are available.
• Safety-first mindset with a strong commitment to following established procedures.

Work Environment

The role is performed consistently outdoors in active construction and utility work zones. You work in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and changing environments, and spend most of the day standing, walking, and handling traffic control equipment. The setting includes roadways, construction equipment, and moving vehicles, requiring continuous alertness and adherence to safety procedures. Work hours may vary based on project needs, and shifts can be long, with opportunities for overtime. Attire should be practical for outdoor labor and suitable for a safety-focused environment, typically including sturdy footwear and appropriate work clothing compatible with required safety gear.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Uniontown, PA.

The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $19.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
