Canal Bank Protection Laborer

FG Construction, LLC is seeking dependable and hardworking Canal Bank Protection Laborers to join our field operations team. This position performs hands-on construction work associated with canal bank stabilization, erosion control, shoreline protection, drainage, and related civil construction activities.

This is a physically demanding outdoor position. Candidates must be able to swim and must be willing and able to enter and work in canal water as required by assigned duties, following company safety procedures and using required protective equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform general labor associated with canal bank protection, stabilization, and restoration projects.
• Enter, wade, and perform assigned construction tasks in canal water when required and authorized, following established jobsite safety procedures.
• Assist with the installation and placement of riprap, rock, geotextile/filter fabric, bedding material, and other erosion-control materials.
• Assist crews with grading, excavation, backfilling, compacting, and site preparation.
• Handle and position materials by hand as required.
• Assist equipment operators and foremen with ground-level operations.
• Use hand and power tools such as shovels, rakes, sledgehammers, compactors, and other construction equipment.
• Help establish and maintain safe work areas around canals, slopes, excavations, and heavy equipment.
• Perform site cleanup and maintain an organized work area.
• Load, unload, move, and stage construction materials and tools.
• Follow instructions from the Foreman and other field leadership.
• Follow all company safety policies and wear required PPE, including approved flotation equipment when required. Swimming ability does not replace required flotation equipment or other water-safety measures.
• Assist with other roadway, drainage, underground, and civil construction activities as needed.
  

Qualifications

• Previous experience in heavy civil construction, canal work, erosion control, drainage, underground utilities, earthwork, or similar field construction is preferred.
• Experience installing riprap, geotextile fabric, erosion-control materials, or shoreline/canal stabilization is a plus.
• Must be able to swim.
• Must be willing and able to enter and work in canal water, including wading and performing manual construction tasks in wet and muddy conditions, using required safety equipment.
• Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors for extended periods.
• Ability to safely work around water, canal banks, slopes, excavations, and heavy construction equipment.
• Ability to lift and carry construction materials, tools, and equipment.
• Comfortable working in South Florida weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight.
• Ability to follow verbal instructions and work effectively as part of a crew.
• Dependable attendance and reliable transportation to assigned jobsites are required.
• Must be willing to comply with all company safety requirements and jobsite procedures.
  

Physical Requirements

This position regularly requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and working on uneven or sloped terrain. Duties also include entering and exiting canal water, wading, and maintaining balance while performing manual work on wet, muddy, or slippery surfaces. Swimming ability is required.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily outdoors on active heavy civil construction sites, including work directly in canal water as project duties require. Employees may encounter wet clothing and footwear, muddy or slippery surfaces, uneven canal bottoms, canals and waterways, excavations, moving equipment, traffic, dust, noise, and other typical construction-site conditions.

All in-water work must follow established safety procedures, with required protective equipment and appropriate jobsite safety measures in place.
