Donald Smith Company is hiring a full-time Service Tech in Headland, AL.
Donald Smith Company is a family-owned and operated water well drilling and pump repair company that has been in business for over 80 years.
As a Service Tech, you will primarily perform service, troubleshooting, and repair work, helping customers resolve residential plumbing, electrical, and water system issues. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, good communication, and a customer-focused approach. You must also be willing to participate in an on-call rotation and travel out of town periodically to support field crews and complete repair work.
Responsibilities
- Perform residential plumbing, electrical, and water well pump service and repair work.
- Troubleshoot issues, identify the cause of problems, and complete repairs efficiently.
- Communicate professionally with customers, including handling complaints and working with upset or frustrated customers.
- Provide recommendations for repairs and services and assist with sales opportunities.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for weekend emergency service calls.
- Work independently after completing initial training with an experienced team member.
- Follow company safety procedures and maintain a professional approach when working at customer locations.
Qualifications
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience in service, plumbing, electrical, pump repair, or a related technical field.
- Knowledge of residential plumbing and electrical systems preferred.
- Strong communication and customer service skills, including the ability to handle difficult customer interactions professionally.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently after training.
- Willingness to work approximately 45–55 hours per week, including occasional extended days and scheduled weekend on-call rotations.
- All employees are subject to DOT random drug testing.
Preferred Experience, But Not Required
- Residential plumbing and electrical repair experience.
- Experience servicing water well pumps or related equipment.
- Experience with small cranes, pulling rigs, or similar equipment.
- Previous experience in a field service or customer-facing repair role.
Hours & Travel
- Regular schedule is Monday–Friday, 6:30AM- 4:30 PM. Some days may run later depending on service needs.
- Expected schedule of approximately 45–55 hours per week.
- Weekend on-call rotation runs from Friday morning through Thursday night, with weekend coverage approximately once per month.
- Out-of-town travel is very rare.
Pay & Benefits
- $18–$22 per hour, based on experience.
- 1.5% commission on sales generated by the employee.
- $40 additional pay for weekend on-call coverage.
