Job Description

Job Description

Be the financial engine behind a growing family of construction brands, with a CFO in your corner.

About Consolidated Building Group (CBG)

Consolidated Building Group (CBG) is a West Michigan construction company headquartered in Rockford, MI, and the parent company of two brands: Halyard, a commercial interior-finishes contractor specializing in cold-formed metal framing, drywall hanging and finishing, and acoustical ceiling systems, and Tally, our cold-formed steel panelized prefabrication brand. Across our brands, we serve general contractors and developers on retail, office, mixed-use, multi-family, hospitality, residential, industrial, and house-of-worship projects.

At CBG, people come first. We empower our team members to thrive through a culture built on proactive ownership (“Batteries Included”), strong collaboration, reliability (“Walk the Talk”), and a commitment to continuous growth (“Grow or Die”).

When you join us, you’re not just taking a job. You’re becoming part of a company that aims to deliver the best collaborative experience in the construction industry, with a mission to safely and efficiently provide superior craftsmanship across commercial, multifamily and residential projects.

The Role

The Controller at CBG runs the day-to-day accounting operation for Consolidated Building Group and its brands. You’ll lead the month-end and year-end close, keep our books accurate and timely, and make sure the company gets paid for the work we perform. Pay applications are the most important financial process of your month, and you’ll own them from start to finish.

You’ll lead a team of Staff Accountants, work day-to-day with our Chief Operating Officer, and receive mentorship and career guidance from our Chief Financial Officer. You’ll also have room to modernize how the work gets done: if you see a repetitive task, you’ll be encouraged to automate it, AI tools included, so your time goes to analysis, controls, and decision support instead of data entry.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the monthly pay application cycle across all projects and entities: review and approve pay apps (AIA G702/G703 or customer-required formats) so every one is accurate, complete, and on time
  • Verify billed amounts, retainage, and approved change orders; confirm percent complete with project teams before anything goes out
  • Track pay app status and resolve customer rejections or revisions quickly
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close, manage the general ledger, and review reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals
  • Maintain separate books and P&Ls for each entity and brand; reconcile intercompany activity and prepare consolidated financials for the CFO
  • Prepare job cost records, work-in-progress schedules, and over/under billing analysis
  • Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and fixed assets, including collections and vendor and subcontractor payments
  • Keep us compliant: lien waivers, insurance certificates, 1099s, sales and use tax, property tax, and insurance audits
  • Support outside accountants and auditors on tax filings, reviews, and audits
  • Administer our accounting software and build automation (AI tools included) that reduces manual work, with the controls to back it up
  • Train, coach, and evaluate Staff Accountants; document procedures and cross-train the team so nothing depends on one person

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • 4+ years of accounting experience
  • CPA or CPA-eligible
  • Working knowledge of GAAP, plus construction accounting know-how (job costing, WIP reporting, progress billing, retainage) or the ability to pick it up fast
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Foundation, QuickBooks, or similar) and advanced Excel skills
  • Knowledge of payroll, sales and use tax, and 1099 reporting
  • Sharp attention to detail and the ability to hit deadlines during close and pay app season
  • Clear written and verbal communication, sound judgment, and the discretion to handle confidential financial information
  • Genuine interest in using AI and automation to streamline routine accounting work

Bonus Points

  • Accounting experience with a general contractor, specialty trade contractor, or manufacturer
  • Public accounting experience (audit, review, or tax)
  • Multi-entity, intercompany, or consolidated accounting experience
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Experience with Foundation construction accounting software

The Details

  • Location: Based at our corporate headquarters in Rockford, MI, with occasional visits to active jobsites. We offer flexibility in where you work, including work-from-home options, and we arrange it together with your manager.
  • Travel: Minimal, occasional local trips only
  • Hours: Full-time, Monday through Friday, with flexibility in how your schedule and work location come together. We’ll talk through what works during the interview process.
  • Physical: Primarily seated computer-based work; occasional walking on active construction sites with required PPE
