Job Description

Job Description

Position Summary

The Project Engineer III is an experienced structural engineer with demonstrated proficiency in structural analysis, design, and project documentation. Working under the direction of Project Executives and Project Managers, the Project Engineer III performs advanced and complex structural engineering assignments and provides significant technical support throughout the design and construction phases of projects.

At this level, engineers are expected to demonstrate strong technical judgment, proficiency with Apex's preferred analysis and design software, and a comprehensive understanding of structural systems, construction documents, and project coordination. Project Engineer III team members also contribute to the technical development of less-experienced engineers and participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups to advance the firm's engineering standards, tools, and technical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform advanced structural analysis and design of complex structural components and building systems using applicable building codes, design standards, and engineering principles.
  • Develop and evaluate complex structural analysis models, including three-dimensional gravity and lateral building models, and establish appropriate modeling assumptions, loading conditions, boundary conditions, and design parameters.
  • Evaluate structural analysis results and apply engineering judgment to identify unusual behavior, load distribution, forces, reactions, deflections, stability concerns, or modeling conditions requiring further evaluation.
  • Develop structural design solutions for complex conditions and evaluate alternatives based on structural performance, constructability, efficiency, and project requirements.
  • Apply and interpret ASCE 7, IBC, AISC, ACI, TMS, SJI, and other applicable codes and standards, including provisions requiring engineering interpretation beyond routine design applications.
  • Develop and review structural calculations and engineering documentation for completeness, consistency, appropriate design assumptions, and conformance with project design criteria and applicable standards.
  • Proficiently read and interpret architectural, structural, and other project construction documents and use those documents to develop and coordinate the structural design.
  • Review architectural and MEP/FP drawings and models to identify structural impacts, coordination requirements, penetrations, equipment loads, clearances, support requirements, and potential conflicts affecting the structural design.
  • Coordinate structural design requirements with architects and other engineering disciplines under the direction of the Project Manager or Project Executive and assist in developing solutions to multidisciplinary coordination issues.
  • Develop engineering information required for structural drawings and models and work with BIM/modeling team members to communicate and resolve more complex structural detailing and documentation requirements.
  • Perform detailed engineering reviews of structural drawings and models to confirm consistency with calculations, structural design intent, project requirements, and Apex standards.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and other construction-phase documentation and assist in evaluating more complex construction-related engineering issues.
  • Participate in external project meetings and technical coordination discussions with architects, consultants, contractors, and clients as directed by the Project Manager or Project Executive.
  • Clearly communicate technical concepts, design requirements, engineering concerns, and proposed solutions to both technical and non-technical project team members.
  • Identify technical issues, missing information, coordination concerns, or conditions that could significantly affect the structural design and communicate them to the Project Manager or Project Executive.
  • Assist Project Managers and Project Executives with technical evaluations, design decisions, constructability reviews, and resolution of complex engineering issues.
  • Provide technical guidance to Project Engineer I and Project Engineer II team members, including assistance with structural calculations, analysis models, design methods, software, codes, and Apex engineering standards.
  • Review engineering work prepared by less-experienced engineers when assigned and provide technical comments and guidance to support their continued development.
  • Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, design tools, calculation procedures, software practices, technical resources, and lessons learned.
  • Apply Apex's engineering standards, QA/QC procedures, documentation requirements, and project delivery processes consistently throughout assigned engineering work.
  • Continue developing expertise in structural systems, building codes, analysis methods, constructability, fabrication, erection, and emerging engineering technologies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Typically four or more years of relevant structural engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the analysis and design of structural building systems using steel, concrete, masonry, and other applicable structural materials.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with structural load development, load paths, gravity and lateral systems, and the interaction of structural components within the overall building system.
  • Proficiency with ASCE 7 and working knowledge of applicable building codes and material design standards, with the ability to research, interpret, and apply provisions to complex structural conditions.
  • Proficiency with Apex's preferred structural analysis and design software and demonstrated ability to develop and evaluate three-dimensional structural analysis models.
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis behavior with the ability to evaluate the reasonableness of analysis results, recognize unusual structural behavior, and determine when additional evaluation is necessary.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural and structural construction documents and developing structural design based on project requirements.
  • Developing proficiency in reviewing MEP/FP and other discipline drawings and understanding how those systems affect and interface with the structural design.
  • Ability to develop clear, organized, and comprehensive structural calculations and engineering documentation.
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate technical structural requirements with architects, consultants, contractors, and other project participants under the direction of project leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills are required, both verbal and written.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated technical judgment and attention to detail.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and constructive feedback to less-experienced engineers.
  • Commitment to continued technical development and contributing to Apex's engineering standards, technical resources, and knowledge sharing.
