Job Description
Precision Metal Cutoff Operator

Employer: Mallard Manufacturing, a MacLean-Fogg Company

Location: Sterling, IL · Work Arrangement: On-site

Schedule: 1st Shift, Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–2:30 PM

Compensation: $18.80–$20.10 per hour · Employment Type: Full-time, Hourly · Overtime: May be required based on business needs

A day in the life

Your shift begins at 6:30 AM on the production floor. You verify the day’s work orders, review blueprints, and set up your saw for the first run. As parts move through, you monitor feeds and speeds, confirm dimensions with calipers, gauges, and micrometers, and complete first-piece and in-process checks to keep quality on track. If a jam or misfeed occurs, you isolate the cause, make safe adjustments, and resume steady flow. Throughout the day, you log totals, document inspections, and help with minor setups, preventative care, and cleaning so the equipment is ready for the next job.

What you’ll handle
  • Independently run assigned sawing equipment for standard production while maintaining safe, consistent throughput.
  • Conduct first-piece and in-process inspections; verify specs with calipers, gauges, and micrometers.
  • Troubleshoot stoppages, jams, or misfeeds and perform minor machine adjustments.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and work orders when applicable.
  • Accurately complete production logs, quality records, and related documentation.
  • Follow safety, environmental, and quality procedures; support minor setups, adjustments, preventive maintenance, machine cleanliness, and daily care.
What you bring
  • No formal education credential required.
  • 6+ months of prior machine operation experience.
  • Comfort using standard measurement tools.
  • Basic math, reading, and communication skills.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and a quality-first mindset.
Work environment and physical demands
  • Prolonged standing, walking, bending, and reaching; shifts may extend up to 12 hours.
  • Regularly lift, carry, push, or pull 35–50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity for handling tools, materials, and small parts.
  • Visual acuity to monitor gauges and conduct basic inspections.
  • Manufacturing setting with noise, vibration, dust, oil, and temperature changes.
  • Required PPE must be worn.

The physical demands listed reflect what’s required to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
