GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)
Cementation is seeking a Structural Designer to build accurate, constructible 3D models of temporary structures for mine construction projects. This is a modeling-first role, you will turn engineering intent, site conditions, and field feedback into Revit models, drawings, and marked-up review sets that crews can build from safely.
Typical work includes mine structures used in shaft sinking and development, such as headframes, Galloway stages, shaft collars, and the supports, platforms, and access structures that go with them. You will work closely with engineers, project managers, and field teams within a Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) workflow.
An engineering background is preferred but not required. Strong 3D modeling skills, construction sense, and attention to detail matter most.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed 3D models of temporary structures in Autodesk Revit, from concept through issued-for-construction.
- Produce general arrangement drawings, plans, sections, elevations, details, and fabrication or erection drawings from the model.
- Coordinate temporary works models with permanent structures, mechanical and electrical systems, existing site conditions, and mine infrastructure.
- Run clash detection and constructability reviews, then resolve conflicts with engineers and project teams.
- Use Bluebeam Revu to mark up, review, compare, and track drawing sets and RFIs, including Studio Sessions with internal and external stakeholders.
- Translate engineer sketches, calculations, and redlines into accurate models and drawings.
- Generate quantity takeoffs, material lists, and schedules to support estimating, procurement, and logistics.
- Support VDC activities such as 4D sequencing, site logistics models, and visualizations for planning and safety reviews.
- Integrate survey, point cloud, or laser scan data to model existing conditions where available.
- Maintain model standards, families, templates, and file organization in line with company BIM standards.
- Manage revisions and document control so the field always has the current issue.
- Respond to field questions and support site teams during installation, which may include occasional site visits.
Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate hands-on proficiency in the following four areas.
- Autodesk Revit: Advanced structural modeling, including custom family creation, view and sheet setup, annotation, schedules, and worksharing in a multi-user environment.
- Bluebeam Revu: Daily use for markups, document comparison, quantity measurement, sets management, and collaborative review in Bluebeam Studio.
- Building Information Modeling (BIM): Working knowledge of BIM workflows, model coordination, Level of Development (LOD) expectations, and model-based deliverables. Experience with Navisworks or similar coordination tools is a plus.
- Virtual Design and Construction (VDC): Experience using models to plan construction, including clash coordination, sequencing, site logistics, and constructability reviews with field and project teams.
Qualifications
Required
- 3+ years of structural 3D modeling or drafting experience in construction, industrial, or heavy civil work.
- A self-starter who takes initiative, works independently with limited direction, identifies problems early, and develops and presents practical solutions to the team.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Autodesk Revit and Bluebeam Revu.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, engineering sketches, shop drawings, standards, and specifications.
- Understanding of structural steel, timber, and concrete construction and how temporary structures are built and erected.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Clear written and verbal communication with engineers, project managers, and field crews.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or an Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
- Alternatively, an associate degree or technical diploma in drafting, design, or construction technology with equivalent experience.
- Experience in mining, heavy industrial, or energy construction.
- Experience with mine structures such as headframes, galloway stages, shaft collars, or other shaft-sinking structures.
Additional Skills, Work Environment, and Benefits
Nice to have
- Navisworks, AutoCAD, Advance Steel, Tekla Structures, or Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC/BIM 360).
- Point cloud and laser scan workflows (ReCap or similar).
- Dynamo or other Revit automation tools.
- Familiarity with MSHA or OSHA requirements as they apply to temporary structures.
Work environment
- Office-based in Sandy, Utah with a hybrid schedule.
- Occasional travel to active mine sites, which may involve remote locations, PPE, and site safety training.
- Must be eligible to obtain any site-specific safety certifications required by clients.
- We offer professional development, software training, and support toward EIT/PE licensure.
- Premium benefits plan. Medical, Dental, and Vision premiums covered by Cementation.
