Job Description

Job Description

The Electrical Designer turns the electrical design basis into a buildable, code-compliant drawing package that the shop can wire from. This position produces the schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and schedules for control panels, Power Distribution Centers (PDCs), E-Houses, switchgear, and MCC packages, and sizes the wire, cable tray, and conduit that connect them in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).

This is a hands-on production role. The Electrical Designer is expected to draw a control schematic from a functional description, read someone else's schematic and explain what it does, and keep every drawing accurate through revisions, client comments, and as-built turnover.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Drafting

• Produce complete electrical design packages in AutoCAD control schematics, wiring and interconnect diagrams, one-lines, interior panel layouts, and equipment general arrangements.

• Draw electrical control schematics from functional requirements, and interpret existing schematics to confirm the intended operation of each circuit.

• Lay out equipment inside enclosures and walk-in E-Houses, where clearance, egress, and equipment fit are hard constraints.

• Develop terminal block plans, wireway routing, I/O lists, bills of material, nameplate schedules, and cable and conduit schedules.

• Maintain rigorous revision control redlines through as-builts with no orphan revisions and no undocumented field changes.

• Incorporate internal redlines and client review comments quickly and accurately through the full revision cycle.

Sizing & Code Compliance

• Size conductors for load, ampacity, derating, and voltage drop in accordance with the NEC.

• Calculate cable tray fill and conduit fill, and select the proper tray, conduit, and fitting sizes for each run.

• Apply NEC requirements to equipment layout and wiring methods, including working clearances and grounding and bonding.

• Select components breakers, CTs and PTs, relays, terminal blocks, fuses, and control power transformers and document them on the drawings and BOM.

• Check designs against structural framing, HVAC, cable tray, and floor and wall penetrations so interferences are resolved on paper rather than in the field.

• Support the shop during build and testing by answering wiring questions and updating drawings to reflect approved changes.

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of AutoCAD experience producing electrical drawings (required).

• Has produced complete design packages, not just marked up someone else's drawings.

• Technical degree or equivalent shop-floor or design-group experience a four-year degree is not required. Strong candidates often come from a panel shop or switchgear design group.

• Experience with industrial control panels, PDCs, E-Houses, switchgear, or MCCs is preferred.

• Has worked a job through a full revision cycle, including client comments and as-built turnover.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Electrical & Code Knowledge

• Working knowledge of the NEC, including conductor ampacity and derating, conduit and cable tray fill, working clearances, and grounding and bonding.

• Ability to size wire, cable tray, and conduit fill for power and control circuits.

• Basic understanding of electrical circuits power, control, and instrumentation circuits, and how components such as relays, contactors, breakers, and power supplies work together.

• Ability to draw and interpret electrical control schematics and explain the functionality of the circuit.

Drawing & Documentation

• Expert-level AutoCAD project organization, wire numbering, cross-referencing, and generating reports and schedules.

• Produces equipment general arrangements, elevations and sections, interior panel layouts, terminal block plans, cable and conduit schedules, I/O lists, and BOMs.

• Attention to detail and a disciplined approach to drawing standards, title blocks, and file naming.

Software

• AutoCAD (5+ years), advanced Excel, and Bluebeam for markup and comment review. 3D exposure (Inventor or SolidWorks) is a plus.

Preferred

• Familiarity with UL 508A / UL 891 construction rules and NEMA enclosure ratings.

Salary: $100k-115k
