Spyglass Talent Solutions, a retained recruitment firm, has been engaged by a confidential client to conduct a search for a Risk & Safety Manager.
Our client is a well-established, family-owned specialty construction subcontractor serving commercial and industrial customers. The position is based in central North Carolina. The Risk & Safety Manager reports directly to the President and is the go-to person for contracts, safety, insurance, HR support, fleet and facility needs. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working across multiple departments in a paper-based environment.
This is a true “catch-all” role where no two weeks look the same. Some weeks are spent reviewing contracts and updating safety records at a desk, and others are spent visiting job sites, handling a claim, or coordinating a facility project. There is no manual labor involved.
Key Responsibilities
Contract Review
- Read, review, and mark up customer contracts and purchase orders, flagging liability language and terms that need to be revised before signing.
- Negotiate revisions with customers and general contractors until contracts are fully executed.
- Complete customer prequalification packages and applications.
- Review and renew third-party contracts annually, and create and file sub-labor contracts.
Safety
- Oversee the company’s safety program, including the safety manual, weekly toolbox talks, and OSHA 300 logs.
- Maintain the safety training matrix in Excel, schedule required training (OSHA, First Aid/CPR/AED, customer-specific and third-party compliance training), and make sure employees are signed up on time.
- Visit job sites regularly, ideally weekly and shortly after a new job starts, to conduct safety inspections and build relationships with customer safety directors and site safety staff.
- Complete customer-required safety documents (SSSP, JSA, SOP, etc.) and keep third-party compliance portals up to date, including EMR reports.
Insurance and Claims
- Work with the company’s insurance broker on the annual package insurance renewal (June through August), including general liability and auto.
- Manage auto, workers’ compensation, and property damage claims from start to finish, including incident investigations, job site visits, photos, filing, and follow-up.
- Support employees after a workplace injury, including coordinating medical care and return-to-duty testing.
- Issue certificates of insurance (COIs) to customers and upload them to third-party contractor sites.
Human Resources
- Conduct new hire orientation and coordinate background checks, drug testing, and fit-for-duty appointments.
- Assist managers with hiring, discipline, and employee relations, with support from the company’s third-party HR service.
- Post job openings, attend job fairs, and keep required labor law postings and employee disclosures current.
Fleet and Facilities
- Oversee the company’s vehicle fleet, including GPS tracking, insurance cards, recalls, and new vehicle setup.
- Coordinate building maintenance and repairs, including HVAC, the alarm system, office equipment, and annual fire extinguisher inspections.
- Gather bids and quotes from outside contractors for facility projects and oversee their work on site.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in a related field.
- Comfort reading long, detailed contracts and spotting liability concerns.
- Strong organization and follow-through, with the ability to manage many different priorities at once.
- Willingness to get out of the office and visit active job sites weekly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
