Job Description

The Production Supervisor oversees manufacturing operations on either 2nd shift (12:00 PM 8:30 PM) or 3rd shift (8:00 PM 4:30 AM) in a high-volume coatings and adhesives facility. This role leads production teams, executes schedules and job assignments, coordinates inventory, and drives production efficiency while maintaining a safe, compliant, and well-organized workplace. The Production Supervisor ensures operators are properly trained, production runs meet specifications, and all materials and processes are accurately documented, while continuously improving processes through problem solving and innovation.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily production operations on assigned shift, including execution of production schedules, job assignments, and coordination of resources to meet output and quality targets.
• Ensure verification and proper execution of work orders, confirming that production teams understand requirements and follow documented instructions.
• Coordinate the use of personnel, equipment, and materials to maintain efficient workflow and meet production needs.
• Verify that raw materials and process data are correctly collected, recorded, and documented throughout each day.
• Ensure materials are received, issued, and returned accurately against work orders, including proper labeling, quantities, and placement in designated storage areas.
• Develop and execute training for production staff, ensuring all operators are competent in inventory management, including issuing and receiving materials, retagging, and stock placement.
• Maintain competency to operate each piece of production equipment and provide coverage when staffing is low to keep equipment running.
• Document job cost variances for both closed and released work orders, reviewing for inaccuracies and coordinating with the Lake Bluff teams to correct errors as work orders are closed.
• Assist the Production Manager with scheduling resources so that jobs are brought to the production floor correctly and production teams receive clear communication on work orders and key information.
• Proactively collaborate with Quality and Purchasing teams to address non-compliant materials that have been received or produced.
• Hold employees accountable for proper handling of HAZMAT materials and ensure adherence to all safety and environmental regulations.
• Maintain housekeeping standards within the facility, including organized storage of pallets, cores, drums, end plates, and other materials.
• Monitor shift attendance records, intervening when necessary to ensure compliance with attendance and punctuality expectations.
• Ensure adequate shift coverage by managing call-ins, absences, and PTO requests, and by providing coverage when needed.
• Make recommendations for process and product improvements that enhance product consistency, quality, and production efficiency.
• Communicate clearly and consistently with employees, providing direction, motivation, and feedback to support performance and teamwork.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience in a supervisory role within a manufacturing or production environment.
• Strong team-building and conflict management abilities, with a focus on fostering collaboration and accountability.
• Formal problem-solving skills and a demonstrated sense of urgency in addressing issues and meeting production goals.
• Knowledge of coating and laminating processes and related production equipment.
• Understanding of production scheduling and inventory management practices.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and adapt to changing requirements, priorities, and timeframes.
• Proficiency with an ERP/MRP system for managing work orders, materials, and production data.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to organize, direct, and self-manage work.
• Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with manufacturing equipment, including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical/PLC-related systems.
• Ability to manage, direct, motivate, and communicate with employees across different functions and shifts.
• Capability to perform basic mathematical computations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and percentage calculations.
• Availability to work overtime when necessary to meet production demands.
• Proficiency with Excel, Word, and Outlook for documentation, reporting, and communication.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience in manufacturing environments involving coatings, adhesives, or similar chemical-based products.
• Background in maintenance, repair, or building maintenance within an industrial setting.
• Familiarity with PLC electrical systems, mechanical systems, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment.
• Comfort working with and around HAZMAT materials, with an understanding of safe handling practices.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain a clean, efficient, and well-structured production area.
• Ability to train and mentor operators, including those new to the facility or industry.
• Experience using ERP systems to manage inventory, work orders, and job cost variances.
• Capability to collaborate cross-functionally with Production, Quality, Purchasing, and other teams to resolve issues and improve processes.

Work Environment

The facility specializes in manufacturing coatings and adhesives used in products such as non-slip walkways, skateboard grip tape, and emergency exit signs. The Lake Bluff location is the primary production site, where materials are mass produced before being shipped to another location for order measurement and fulfillment. The environment includes a strong chemical presence due to the use of chemicals in adhesive manufacturing, and work is performed around industrial equipment and HAZMAT materials with strict adherence to safety and environmental regulations. The maintenance team is very small, allowing close collaboration and the opportunity to learn directly from a highly experienced colleague with decades of tenure. Shifts are structured as 2nd shift (12:00 PM 8:30 PM) or 3rd shift (8:00 PM 4:30 AM), with overtime as needed to support production demands.

This is a Permanent position based out of Lake Bluff, IL.

The pay range for this position is $58000.00 - $70000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
