The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides personalized care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, or aging-related needs. DSPs help individuals live fulfilling, independent lives within their communities by offering companionship, guidance, and assistance with daily living activities. Support is tailored to each person's goals and preferences and may occur across multiple homes or community locations.
DSPs are expected to demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and a commitment to providing excellent service in every interaction.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:SupportIndividualEngagementandInclusion
- Interact withindividuals respectfully andwithawareness ofboth verbalandnonverbal communication.
- Encourage and assist individuals in participating inhome and community activities that reflecttheirinterests andchoices (e.g.,diningout, shopping, sports, church, socialgroups).
- Support individuals inidentifying andworking toward personalgoalsbasedontheir Individual Support Plans (ISPs).
- Teachandassistwithactivities ofdailyliving(ADLs), suchascooking, cleaning,and personal hygiene.
- Promotepositiverelationshipsbetweenindividuals,theirfamilies,andfriends,including helping coordinate visitsand participation in special events.
- Respectandsupport individuals' personalandfamily religiousorspiritualpracticesand choices.
- Modelappropriatebehaviorandcommunication,maintaining professionalism,self-control, and a respectful tone at all times.
- Maintainasafeandcomfortable homeenvironment,assistingindividualsinmaking personal choices (e.g., TV, music, or activities).
- Safelytransportindividuals, followingallcompany andregulatorysafetyprocedures.
Promote Health and Well-Being
- Readandfolloweachindividual'sISP,medicalprotocols,andcommunicationlogs.
- Monitoranddocumentindividuals' dailyactivities,healthconcerns,andbehavioralchanges accurately.
- Supportpersonalhygiene,grooming, anddressingaccordingtoeachperson'sneedsand preferences.
- Observeforchanges inhealthstatusandpromptly reportconcerns tosupervisorsor nursing staff.
- Followmedicalinstructions,medicationguidelines,andtreatmentplansasdirected.
- Accompanyindividualstomedicalappointments,ensuringeffectivecommunication between individuals and healthcare providers.
- Providephysicalassistanceasneeded,includingusingmechanical liftsorotherequipment safely.
Ensure Safety, Cleanliness, and Meal Preparation Safety and Emergency Response
- Followallsafetyandemergencyprocedures,includingevacuationdrills.
- Maintainclearwalkwaysandexits;removesnowordebriswhennecessary.
- Knowhowtouse emergencyequipmentsuchasfireextinguishersandalarms.
- Useadaptiveandmedicalequipmentproperlyastrained.
Meals and Food Handling
- Assistwithmealplanning, groceryshopping,foodpreparation,andcleanup.
- Prepare meals according to menus, nutrition guidelines, and individual dietary needs.
- Encouragefamily-stylemealsandpositivemealtimeconversation.
- Follow allfoodsafetyandlabelingprocedures.
Home and Vehicle Maintenance
- Maintainaclean,organized,andsafehomeenvironment.
- Completeassignedcleaningchecklistsandlaundrydutiesaccordingtostandards.
- Keepcompanyvehiclesclean,fueled,andproperlydocumented.
Communication, Teamwork, and Professional Conduct
- Seekguidance fromsupervisorsorcoordinators whenunsureaboutproceduresor responsibilities.
- Communicateeffectivelyandrespectfullywithcoworkers,bothverballyandinwriting.
- Collaborateasateamtoensureconsistent,qualitycareforindividuals.
- Demonstrateflexibilityandcooperationduringemergenciesorunexpectedsituations.
- Maintain confidentiality and refrain from gossip or sharing sensitive information about individuals, staff, or the company.
