Job Description

Senior Metrology Engineering Technician

Senior Metrology Engineering Technician is an advanced senior technician role. Operating primarily responsible for AR/VR headsets, smart glasses, and optical components or their infrastructure. This senior technician is responsible for bridging the gap between raw hardware prototyping and high-level optical/mechanical engineering.

Role Overview:

The Senior Metrology Technician is responsible for developing, validating, and executing complex measurement subroutines with focus heavily on advanced optical metrology (wavefront sensing, interferometry, confocal microscopy) and high-precision mechanical alignment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Advanced Measurement Execution: Perform complex, non-routine characterization and sub-micron inspections on delicate optical displays, waveguides, camera modules, and custom silicon.
  • CMM & Optical Tool Programming Support: Write, modify, and optimize automated inspection programs for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and advanced non-contact optical profiling systems.
  • Fixture Design & Prototyping Support: Design and build custom mechanical jigs or test fixtures to hold first-of-a-kind prototypes securely without inducing material stress or distortion. Perform Preventive maintenance, instrument troubleshooting, calibration records, and equipment qualification.
  • Data Analysis & Uncertainty Budgets: Analyze large 3D scan data sets and point clouds using spatial software (e.g., PolyWorks, MATLAB). Calculate measurement uncertainty budgets to guarantee statistical validity.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner directly with Hardware Development Engineers to diagnose out-of-spec tolerances, conduct root-cause analysis on failed components, and refine manufacturing parameters.
  • Lab Support: Standardize lab safety protocols, author complex Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and mentor Level 1 and 2 technicians.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Education: Technical Associate’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optics, Mechatronics, Physics, or equivalent hands-on industry experience.
  • Experience: Typically, 4 to 6+ years of experience in a high-tech metrology role (such as consumer electronics, semiconductors, or advanced optics testing).
  • Quality Engineering mind set and experience
  • Software Proficiency: Excel, Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW and more.
  • Equipment Proficiency: Experience in instrumentation such as white-light interferometers, laser confocal microscopes, automated optical inspection (AOI) systems, and multi-sensor CMMs.
  • Cleanroom Protocol: Comfortable working inside Class cleanroom environments, adhering to strict ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) and particle control requirements.
